JUNE 2000

FROM THE EDITOR
Jim Russell, Secretary

Do you want a little fun and fellowship in your life? Tired of looking for something good on the TV schedule? Have you forgotten what a "night out with the boys" added to your attitude? Come join us at Lodge for an evening of fun, fellowship and entertainment!

Our stated meetings are not filled with reading of Minutes and votes to pay the bills! We mix a little entertainment and time to talk with old friends along with the business of the lodge. Our young officers invite all our members to come and experience the good times shared each month.

Dinners begin at 6:00. They are hosted by the Lodge, are excellent fare for the tummy and a wonderful time to share experiences with our brethren. Immediately following dinner, we usually adjourn into the Lodge room, where we enjoy a good program of entertainment, or a well-informed speaker giving challenge to our intellectual capabilities.

Our meetings are the first Wednesday of each month, twelve months a year, except that in January and July they are held on the second Wednesday. (Coming up in July will be our "2nd annual Herb's Night," where the ladies are invited to share with us in the majority of the evening.) So, join us for a return to your Masonic roots and see some of your old friends!

With the exciting things happening at St. John's this year, there's no better time to encourage your non-Masonic friends to petition the Lodge for membership. If they need a little push, invite them to join us for a pre-Stated dinner and an entertaining speaker.

If you are in need of a petition to offer a friend, ask for a copy. I always have some available at the meeting, or call for one to be mailed. What does it cost to join St. John's Lodge No. 9? The Lodge fee is $100, Grand Lodge fees are $45, for a total of $145. Annual dues vary each year. They are $19 this year.

JUNE STATED FEATURES SNOHOMISH HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE PROJECT

June 7 Featured Speaker:    Ms. Ardi Kveves
In 1994 science teacher Ms. Ardi Kveves of Snohomish High School and oceanographer Ms. Veronique Robigou of the School of Oceanography, UW, started collaborating to create a week-long educational unit which would present the geological, physical and biological processes which exist in a deep-sea, hydrothermal vent system for a 10th to 12th grade level class. The unit is composed of lectures, several demonstrations, and then the link between geology and water chemistry is introduced to the class. Finally a two-day laboratory using a model of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute's Alvin submarine, with navigational, orientation, and sampling exercises, ends the week-long activities.

One of the challenges to teach science in high school is to include hands-on activities during which the students actually get a feel for the responsibility of doing science. In 1997, our Lodge contributed the Alvin remotely-operated submersible model. The students provided all the labor to assemble and test the model.

Ms Kveves and one of her students will speak to the Lodge and bring a video tape of their exciting activities and the submersible in action.

VISIT WEB PAGE FOR MASON LITTLE LEAGUE SCHEDULE

St. John's Lodge No. 9 sponsors two Little League baseball teams. These are the sharpest looking teams on the field, wearing their good looking "Masons" jerseys and baseball caps. And they're pretty good athletes on the field, too. Come watch their games. The schedule can be found on the St. John's web page: www.seattlemasons.org.

"What if...?"
What if we never saw another flower bloom because we grumbled when God sent the rain...?

ALLIANCE FOR EDUCATION HONORS LODGE AND JOHN ROGERS SCHOOL

The Alliance for Education has presented St. John's Lodge No. 9 and John Rogers Elementary School a certificate of nomination for its A+ Partnership Award "in recognition of outstanding commitment to student academic achievement."
Ms Debbie MacDonald, principal of John Rogers, announced the nomination at the Family Appreciation Brunch held last month at the Nile. The award is in recognition of the financial support the Lodge has given to the highly successful accelerated reading program at the school.

ANNUAL COMMUNICATION OF GRAND LODGE OPENS IN WENATCHEE JUNE 8

Several members of the Lodge will be traveling to Wenatchee next week, when the annual communication of Grand Lodge reconvenes Thursday-Saturday, June 8-10. Our own Dick Mecartea, of Elliot Bay lineage, is expected to be elected Grand Master. He has appointed others in the Lodge to assist him in the leadership of Grand Lodge. WBro. David Campbell will now be known as VWBro. Campbell, as he will succeed VWBro. David Julian as Deputy of the Grand Master for District No. 5.

Other members of St. John's who will be a part of the Grand Lodge team will be VWBro. Charles Brockway (Grievances & Appeals), VWBro. Jim Russell and VWBro. Larry Loughnan (Credentials), WBro. Jerry Schor (Masonic Home Endowment), and WBro. Ray Kirlin (Masonic Public Relations).

In addition to the election of a new Grand Master, the business of the annual communication will include the elections of the Grand Lodge Deputy Grand Master, Grand Wardens and Grand Secretary. Fourteen resolutions appear on the preliminary agenda for discussion and vote, as well as the adoption of the Grand Lodge Budget.

WATCH FOR THESE STATED MEETINGS

In July, we will have a fun-filled evening when our Stated Communication of July 12 will be focused on welcoming our "snow birds" and other members who have not been to Lodge for quite a while. Billed as "Herb's Night," we will be wearing Hawaiian shirts or other summer casual wear and enjoying a relaxed evening of business and entertainment. Bring the ladies!

Recognition and honor to our student scholarship winners will precede our August meeting. We will meet the students and their parents at dinner and find out a little about their plans for next year.
