JULY 2000

FROM THE EAST
Ken Lane, Jr., Master

Are you a Herb?

Just as a gardener cultivates herbs in his garden, your lodge cultivates Herbs. It takes nurturing, caring and time for the roots to grow. The end product is fully realized much later. No, we are not growing vegetables, we are growing Masons. We are cultivating the seeds of individuals who have the ability to better themselves and their community. Does this sound confusing? Let me explain.

July 12th is our second annual "Herb's Night." "So," you may ask, "If it's not a vegetable, what is a Herb?" I'm glad you asked! Herbs are not herbs. Herbs are people - Brothers who we have not seen in awhile. This story began last year. St. John's Lodge had been dark for the months of July and August. But out of the dark ages and approaching the twenty-first century, St. John's Lodge now remains open year round! Comes a Brother named Herb who is a snowbird. Bro. Herb lives out of the state during our typical Seattle, cold winter months. Like the swallows of Capistrano, Bro. Herb flies home to enjoy the Northwest's warm summer months. So in honor of Brother Herb and all our other Brothers who are Herbs, rusty Masons or Brothers seeking summer fellowship, we started Herb's Night!

Our ladies are welcome too!

Dinner is at 6:00 p.m. We will have musical entertainment for the ladies while we open lodge, then, following a call to refreshment, invite them to join us until the conclusion of the meeting. Be prepared to have FUN! In the true spirit of daylight lodges and in honor of the summer, attire is casual. No suits, ties or jackets! Break out that Hawaiian shirt in the back of your closet, you know, the one that you haven't worn in awhile, and plan on being with us. Having recently returned from our Grand Lodge Annual Communication, I am very happy to report to you the vision and progress your Grand Lodge officers and committees are taking. It was exciting to see the progress Grand Lodge has made in the past twelve months. As Master of St. John's Lodge, it was also an honor for me to be present as our own Brother, M W Richard Mecartea, was elected Grand Master. M W Mecartea's theme for the coming year is "Shaping the Future."

Are you a Herb? Been awhile since you've seen the inside of a lodge? Now is the time to shape the future. Won't you start "Shaping the Future" by marking the July 12th Stated and September 16th 140th Anniversary (see related article) on your calendar today? I'm looking forward to seeing you!

St. John's Lodge to Hold 2nd Annual "Herb's Night"

It worked so well last year, we're going to do it again! Or something like it.

To acknowledge our second year returning as a 12-month Lodge, we are issuing a special invitation to join us at our July 12 meeting. This meeting will focus on our "snow bird" brethren, and is billed as "Herb's Night." A special evening of entertainment and instruction will be held, beginning with dinner at 6pm, followed by the 7:30 business meeting. Much of the routine of the meeting will be eliminated, except for the necessary paying the bills and voting on a petitioner. Throughout the evening, we will be honoring our brothers who have had little opportunity to join us in recent years. That is why we are extending a special invitation to those who don't get out to Lodge more than once or twice a year.

"Herb Night" was created to honor our members we seldom have the opportunity to meet, and was named after one of our "snow birds" who lives nine months of the year in Hawaii and three months on Mercer Island. For that reason, we will also dress less formally on that evening, and encourage all our brothers (and their ladies) to dress in Hawaiian shirts or other casual attire. Some Masonic education and instruction and an evening of entertainment will make this an evening you won't want to miss.. We expect to honor three Brothers with pins in recognition of their fifty years of Masonic membership.

The ladies are invited to join us for diner and to share in the evening's activities.

We particularly want our snow birds and infrequent attendees to be a part of this. If you are not a frequent attendee, please call the secretary, VWBro. Jim Russell, at (206) 623-0261 if you can join us, so that we may know how many to expect for dinner. Aloha!

'THOMAS JEFFERSON' TO HIGHLIGHT 140TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER

In the next few weeks you will receive an invitation to St. John's 140th anniversary dinner celebration. The date of this event is Saturday, September 16th, at the Nile Country club. Our guest speaker is Mr. Clay Jenkinson. Clay will provide a first hand look at our country's third President, Thomas Jefferson. Clay is a Rhodes and Danfort Scholar, winner of numerous awards, and has appeared before Presidents and Supreme Court Justices. He was one of the principle on-air consultants to Ken Burns' PBS special covering the life of Thomas Jefferson. Mr. Jefferson was responsible for the Louisiana Purchase, which opened the western half of the United States, and started eventual settlement into the Northwest. Clay will provide an interesting perspective into our past.

HISTORIC ARTIFACTS GOING TO THE DUMP

Recently we have heard several horror stories involving important and historically significant documents and artifacts ending up in trash bins. Please Brothers, if you need to clean your garage or attic, be careful. "One man's trash is another man's treasure." Make an effort to save items that may be of value Masonically or historically. Contact a Brother who is interested in history or collecting. He'll be glad to give you a hand. Failing that, contact the Secretary who will make an effort to find someone in your area to assist you. Lets not trash our history.

MASONIC "WORD OF THE DAY"

"....the lamb has in all ages been deemed an emblem of innocence; he therefore who wears the lambskin as the badge of a Mason is thereby continually reminded of that purity of life and rectitude of conduct which are so essentially necessary to his gaining admission into the Celestial Lodge above, where the Supreme Architect of the Universe forever presides."
(Washington Monitor)

RECTITUDE   (REK tuh tood)  n.: adherence to high standards, righteousness; correctness.

        Examples:

Although the CEO's motives might have been suspect, there is no doubt of the rectitude of the actions undertaken.

The young sapling, bent by the gale-force winds, will regain its natural rectitude when the weather returns to normal.

ANNUAL PICNIC AT NILE GROUNDS SATURDAY, AUGUST 19

Mark your calendars, invite your friends and especially those who might be good candidates for Masonry and come to our annual St. John's Lodge No. 9 Family Picnic, Saturday, August 19. As in the past years, our picnic will be held at the Nile Temple picnic grounds, area "A." The Lodge will furnish the steaks, hot dogs and buns. You need only to bring a choice of one of the following: hot or cold vegetable, salad, dessert. And, oh, yeah, your appetite!

The festivities will begin at 11:15am, with steaks coming off the grill at noon. Lunch will be followed by our traditional Bingo! game, and other games will be available for the youngsters. Swimming is allowed only with adult supervision. No life guard will be on duty.

A "reminder" and return form will be mailed to you in mid-July. Reservations need to be received by August 7.
