FROM THE EAST Greetings Brothers! I'd like to share with you one of the visions we are working on for you for the coming year. We're creating the St. John's "Company Store." The idea behind this is to have St. John's merchandise, Polo-type shirts and T-shirts, pens, pencils, letter openers to name a few items, all containing the St. John's moniker and Masonic logos. Some of these will include the St. John's Internet web-site address and our telephone number. We are working on the purchase of items, so if you have ideas of items that we can carry, please let us know. Items will be purchased by the Lodge and sold at cost to the members. It's time to show our pride in our Lodge and wear our colors while out in public. Let non-Masons see us and gain awareness that we exist in their communities! So, how can I purchase something from the store? Good question! We will have on our web page and in the Trestleboard a listing of our items and the cost. But wait! There's more! If you have not been to Lodge lately, now is the time to come and share fraternal bonds with us and renew old ones. Starting in December, the newly elected Senior Warden Skip Albertson will pay the craft their wages at each meeting. Any member that attends Lodge will receive a "St. John's Buck." Basically, we are printing our own money. We're not proud. We'll bribe your attendance! The Buck can be used to offset the cost of an item at the Company Store, or it can be directed to be paid to a St. John's charity of your choice. Or, hold on and collect them! So Brothers, if I can't appeal to you with just a free dinner before Lodge, how about a free dinner and a St. John's Buck? By your attendance in Lodge, you could help a charity, gain valuable merchandise and best of all, enjoy the benefits of your fraternal bonds. I'm very happy to announce that our Senior Warden, my brother, Brother Jeff Lane was elected as your Master for next year. For two years, Lodge members have addressed the Master as "Worshipful Brother Lane." Well, the third installment of this trilogy will bring a bright outlook, outstanding leadership and continued Lodge success with a focus on our future. I would also like to congratulate Brother Skip Albertson who has been elected Senior Warden, Brother Terry Grove who has been elected Junior Warden, and Worshipful Brother Allan Pinch who was elected Trustee...and as the song goes, "our future's so bright, I gotta wear shades!" Congratulations Brothers! See you at Lodge! (Remember, the Stated Meeting is November 1st!)
GRAND MASTER TO INSTALL LODGE OFFICERS NOVEMBER 25 Our Grand Master, MWB Richard A. Mecartea, will install a new slate of officers to lead his home Lodge for next year. Bro. Jeff Lane was chosen by the Brethren of St. John's Lodge No. 9 to sit in the East as Worshipful Master. Also elected to lead the Lodge were Bros. Skip Albertson (SW), and Terry Grove (JW). Bro. Joe DuWors was re-elected Treasurer, and VWBro. Jim Russell re-elected Secretary. WBro. Allan Pinch will be a new face on the Board of Trustees, joining WBro. Bill Collison, VWBro. David Campbell, and VWBro. Charles Brockway. WBro. Pinch was the last Master to serve Ionic Lodge No. 90 before its consolidation with St. John's. Officers will be installed Saturday, November 25, at 10am. The ladies are invited to attend the open Installation, which will be at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center. A reception will follow. Bro. Jeff Lane is the third of three members of the Lane family to serve the Lodge. Father Ken Lane, Sr. served in 1999 and Brother Ken Lane, Jr. served in 2000. Jeffery Jay Lane was born June 14, 1961, in Seattle, Washington. He attended Christ the King elementary school and served as altar boy. His interests extended to Little League baseball and the scouting program. He graduated from Ingraham High School in 1979. Brother Lane has been an avid drag racer since 1975. In recent years, he has consistently placed high in the national rankings in his drag racing class. Brother Lane is married, and he and his wife Diane are the proud parents of two children, Cody and Aubrey. His family resides in North Bend. Jeff is the owner of Lane Hardwood Floors, Seattle. Brother Lane was raised a Master Mason, June 25, 1994. He is a member of the Scottish Rite and Shrine.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR VETERANS WEEKEND Eureka Lodge No. 20 has "purchased" the Washington Museum of History and Industry for Veterans weekend and is looking for assistance to staff the Museum. This weekend of November 10-11-12 will honor Veterans of all wars. The Masons will be present to distribute brochures on the Veterans and on Masonry. Flag ceremonies will be performed by Masonic Sojourners, the Shrine and the Boy Scouts. The Museum will be open to the public, without charge. This will be an outstanding way to display Masonry's presence and support to the community. If you would like to assist in this tribute and to make Masonry felt in our community, call VWBro. Tom Rutledge at (206) 954-7498.
2001 DUES STATEMENTS AND MEMBERSHIP CARDS TO BE MAILED IN NOVEMBER Members of St. John's Lodge No. 9 will be receiving their 2001 dues statements or membership cards this month. Dues for 2001 are $19. Members who have served as Past Masters of St. John's, Ionic, Elliot Bay and Roosevelt are not required to pay dues to this Lodge. Also those who have been members of the Fraternity for 40 or more years are excused from paying any more dues to this Lodge. Those who receive statements are asked to return your payment of $19 to the Secretary prior to December 31.
DIDJA KNOW? St. John's Lodge meets on Capital Hill in Seattle. Capital Hill was gonna' be where the State Capital was gonna' be, according to Arthur Denny.
"WILD GAME NIGHT" TO BENEFIT MASONIC SERVICE BUREAU There will be a "Wild Game Night", sponsored by the Masonic Service Bureau, at Alki Masonic Temple, November 8, at 7:30pm. The menu will consist of moose and salmon. Advance reservations and payment of $15 per person or $25 per couple (payable to the Masonic Service Bureau) will be required. This promises to be a delicious and fun way to help support the 121 year old Bureau. The Masonic Service Bureau was established by local Lodges to give aid and assistance to sojourning Masons. The Bureau also provides Masonic funeral services and hospital beds, canes and walkers at no charge. St. John's was one of the early Lodges that helped to establish the Bureau, January 26, 1878.
FLU FACTS Influenza is generally a miserable affair - and it's very contagious. Common symptoms: Fever as high as 104 degrees, chills, whole-body aches, extreme weakness, loss of appetite, dry cough and sore throat. You should definitely get a flue shot if you have severe anemia, diabetes, asthma, or chronic lung, heart, kidney or immune diseases. Flu shots are safe for children and pregnant women. (Flu vaccine viruses are grown in hens' eggs, so if you're allergic to eggs, talk to your doctor about whether this vaccine is safe for you.) A new flu vaccine is given every year because the flu virus changes year to year. It's impossible to get the flu from its vaccine because it contains an inactive - or "dead" - virus. The flu shot prevents 70% to 90% of influenza cases. If you do manage to get the flu, it's likely to be a milder case if you've been vaccinated.
MEMORIAL SERVICES HELD FOR TWO LODGE BROTHERS Bro. Archie Waterbury and WBro. Knut Olson recently were honored with Masonic Memorial Services. Bro. Waterbury was a member of the Lodge from 1948 until his death in August of this year. WBro. Knut Olson was a member of the Lodge from 1957 until his death in October of this year. Masonic burial is a privilege, not an absolute right. But no Master Mason should be denied the honor of this sacred rite. A Brother or his family must request Masonic Services. Entered Apprentices or Fellowcrafts are not entitled to Masonic last rites.
