From The East
Who is buried in Grant's tomb? I would bet that most people correctly guess "Grant". But how many people at our July "Herb's Night" guessed that a Panama hat comes from Panama?
| For those that were unable to make it, and there seemed to be very few, Dr. Eric Vogt easily answered all my tropical questions correctly and received several St. John's gifts as a result. Incidentally, Panama hats come from Ecuador, which is Spanish for equator. | | |
It was great to see 95 people at the meeting. I am confident that if we keep offering interesting programs at our meetings more members will show. Of course having an open meeting is also a big part of that. I hope to see you all at our October 2nd "history night" meeting, which at the request of visiting Grand Master Jimmy Reid, will also be open. More on that in the next few months.
 | | Our scholarship and picnic committees have been working extra hours and their hard work will pay off in the month of August. The August 7th meeting will be dedicated to our scholarship recipients and their families. Scholastic achievement is a cornerstone of Masonry and one of our favorite ongoing charities. |
This year we are supporting students from Franklin, Ballard, and Rainier Beach high schools as well as Seattle Pacific University (SPU). In addition to SPU, these students will be attending a wide variety of post-secondary institutions. Please come to the meeting and find out the details while you enjoy meeting them in person.
| Our annual mid-summer picnic is scheduled for Saturday August 17th at the Nile. As with previous years, St. John's will provide the steaks, hot dogs, buns, and soft drinks and each family will bring an item to contribute, depending on the first initial of their last name. We begin at 11:00. The popular kiddie bounce house from last year will be back. | | |
The first steaks will start rolling off the grill at 12:00. If you plan to play Bingo, please bring a prize! Kid games and races, a now familiar magician, and hopefully a light jazz band are all part of the plan. Please help us get a good count and RSVP as soon as you can.
I sincerely hope everyone is having a good summer. It is hard to believe that for a few years St. Johns went dark in the summer! It seems, to me at any rate, that we are as busy now as any other time during the year. Let us keep it up!

JULY "HERB'S NIGHT" ENJOYED BY MANY
With Mozart's "The Magic Flute" as the principle attraction, ninety-five members and guests enjoyed a fine meal and excellent performance from the young people representing the Seattle Youth Symphony. VWBro. Coe Tug Morgan and Bro. Eric Vogt, with their commentary on the opera and the "Age of Enlightenment," helped make the performance a memorable one for the audience.
