From the East

The next chapter in the history of St. John's No. 9 is complete. Many of you now have a copy of Volume II in your possession from the Anniversary Dinner. For those members who do not, why not come to Lodge and pick up your own? You will not want to miss our October meeting in any case. This will be the official visit of our Grand Master Jimmy Reid, and an open meeting at his request. Dinner will feature an "Oktoberfest" theme. The first event on Wednesday, October 2nd, will be "The Magical Mystery History Tour". We plan to leave the parking lot at the Scottish Rite at 3:30pm. Please do not be late! From there, we will proceed first to downtown Seattle, where we will begin a roughly chronological tour of our former meeting places:

Seattle Masonic Temple on Pine, 1916-1983, followed by the site of the first temple near Yesler and First, and site of the Young Naturalist Hall. We will learn about the Denny Knoll and the lease that St. Johns members helped broker that still endows the University of Washington today!

We will visit the sites of the second temple near Pine and Second (sold 1900), the Knights of Pythias near Pike and First, and the Knights Templar (2320 First).

Then we will go to the University of Washington, where we will look at Denny Hall and discuss the goblets (which will be on display at our Stated) used when dedicating its cornerstone. Did you know that St. John's is connected to the columns featured in the Washington alumni magazine? We will stop by the Sylvan theatre were the columns are located. From there we will stop along Millionaire's Row on the way to Lakeview Cemetery and then back to the Scottish Rite Masonic Center where we meet today!

The tour will return in time for our Oktoberfest and an open meeting where the theme will be history: St. Johns and Seattle intertwined. After dinner the special guest speaker will be James Warren and there may be other notables in attendance (last name Denny?). Around 7:30pm we will introduce the Grand Master and his team in the Quick Room. Alexandra Rust will have a few fun quizzes to see how well you have read your new book. There will be prizes! At the conclusion, we will have a brief business meeting and close.

With all this activity on October 2nd, do not forget the annual oyster feed at the MRC on October 9th. We also will be feeding homeless teens in the U-District on Sunday October 20th through the Teen Feed program. Please contact me if you are interested in helping to feed these hungry kids.

Skip Albertson, Master

Grand Master to Visit St. John's at October Stated!

St. John's Lodge No. 9 is pleased to welcome MWBro. James N. Reid, Jr., Grand Master of Masons of Washington, to our October 2nd Stated Communication. A great share of this meeting will be open to the public, especially to the ladies, who we invite to join us in a special look at our local Masonic history.
James Warren, author of numerous books and articles in The Seattle Post-Intelligencer on Seattle history will be the principal speaker. We are hopeful Dr. Brewster Denny, professor of history at the University of Washington and a descendent of Seattle pioneer Arthur Denny and one of our early members Orion Denny, will be present.

An Oktoberfest dinner will be served at 6pm. The ladies and guests will enjoy this special evening.

Magical Mystery History Tour

We will precede the October Stated meeting with a special bus tour of historic Masonic Seattle. This "Magical Mystery History Tour" will be hosted by Alexandra Rust, our illustrious history writer and wife of our esteemed Junior Warden. The tour will leave the Scottish Rite at 3:30pm on October 2nd and return in time for dinner and the meeting. The rough itinerary includes stops in downtown Seattle, Lakeview Cemetery, and at the University of Washington. All points have a special Masonic and St. John's Lodge significance. Members of the Lodge who want to take part in the "Magical Mystery History Tour" should e-mail Master Skip Albertson or call 360 867-0139 A limited number of spaces remain available. There is no charge for this tour.

History of St. John's Lodge No. 9, Volume II

Volume II of the History of St. John's Lodge No. 9 is now off the press and is highly recommended reading. Three solid years of research and editing have gone into the production of this 258 page hard-bound edition. Ms. Rust has been highly praised by those who have worked on the book and by those who have had a chance to read it. This second volume of our history primarily deals with the period 1950 to 2001, continuing where Bro. Laban Wheeler concluded with his Volume I. Much research concerning many of our early pioneers can also be found in this latest volume. The two volumes make a wonderful addition to every Masonic library. Single copies are available at any Lodge Stated Communication

October already?! That means it's time to head out to the Masonic Retirement Center

The Wednesday following our monthly stated will be highlighted by our annual oyster dinner at the Masonic Retirement Center. Each year the Lodge supplies the oysters for a wonderful oyster stew served to the residents by members of the Lodge.

We have been doing this since the depression years! As is our custom, this will be on the second Wednesday of October, October 9, beginning at 5 p.m. Servers should plan to arrive about 4:30 for instructions.

. Following the dinner, the Lodge will host entertainment for the residents of the Center. This year VWBro. David Julian will entertain the folks on his keyboard.

Past Master's Night, Election of Officers Next Month - Nov. 6

Heads up for November! MWBro. Bill Wood will speak at our November Past Masters Night (and election night). The title of his talk will be, "If Freemasonry were to become illegal and you were arrested for being a Freemason, would there be enough evidence to convict you?". In addition, this night we honor our Past Masters and elect officers for the coming year.
