From the East
IT'S SPRING TIME!! We've all enjoyed some quality time with our families and loved ones over the Easter and spring breaks. Now it's time to clean up the yard, fix what needs to be fixed, or replace them if you messed-up the repair. Time to trip off to the local hardware store for those items you will need to complete those spring and summer projects.
The subject here is "time" - that vile issue which slows some of us down more than others. Recently three members of St. John's assisted one of our brethren in some necessary yard work. I'm sure that there are many of us, who could benefit from some willing labor, but, to perform these chores, we must be aware of the need. Do you know someone (more especially a brother) that could benefit from some friendship, fellowship or assistance?
We all have busy schedules, many demands on our precious time. We come up with a myriad of excuses why we don't have enough time.Years ago, I was told | | |
| that if you wanted something done, find someone who was busy and appeared to be overwhelmed with their own tasks. The theory advanced, that person would determine a way to fit the matter into their schedule (mind set) and address what needed to be done and see to it's implementation and completion. I'm sure we all know someone like that. What would we do without them? |
I don't mean to lay any guilt complex on anyone, just attempting to address the need for some individual rethinking and to thank those who do find the "time.".
The month of May has been laid out to provide several opportunities for you to rekindle your fraternalism with your brethren.
We begin with our FABulous Family Appreciation Brunch at Ivar's on Lake Union, Sunday, May 4th, where we anticipate an attendance above 120.
On Wednesday, May 7th, our stated meeting will feature Dr. Scott Noegel, UW professor of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations, who will present a program entitled "The Ark of the Covenant in the Light of Ancient Egypt." Also, we are proud to host four of the five candidates running for Junior Grand Warden who will present themselves and their hopes for our fraternal future.
On Saturday morning, May 10th, fourteen of us will head South to support and participate with King Solomon Lodge No. 60 in their Annual Golf Scholarship Tournament at Auburn Municipal Golf Course.
Later that evening, some of us will be present at the 60th Anniversary of the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra Alumni Concert at Benaroya Hall. We have ten seats available for the dinner following the concert.
On Sunday, May 25th, we will join the MW Grand Master James N. Reid, Jr. in the District No. 5 annual March to St. Marks Cathedral in observance of Memorial Day.
Where are you going to be? Can you find the time? Your brethren look forward to your attendance at these activities and welcome the fellowship.
What's holding you back?
Terry Grove, Master
LODGE TO HOST CANDIDATES FOR JUNIOR GRAND WARDEN; Dr. Noegel return speaker
Junior Grand Warden. Usually the first elected step to the highest office in our Grand Jurisdiction. Outstanding and talented men, brethren in our fraternity, have throughout the years made themselves available to serve. It must be a strong love of the Fraternity that motivates men to pursue such a demanding and challenging role as Grand Master.
This year we have five Master Masons throughout our jurisdiction who have put their names up for consideration to be elected Junior Grand Warden. They are VW Charles Davis (Richland), RW John Keliher (Tacoma), VW Charles McQuery (Bothell), VW Michael Sanders (Vancouver), and VW John Sleeth (Mount Vernon). Scattered across the State of Washington, each with a desire to shape the future of our fraternity.
At least 4 of those 5 will be visiting St. John's Lodge No. 9 at our next Stated Communication, Wednesday, May 7. Worshipful Master Terry Grove invites all members of our Lodge to join in welcoming and challenging these honored Brothers. Each will be given an opportunity to tell his story; to share his vision for a greater tomorrow, with questions to follow. Dinner will be at 6 p.m., with a special program immediately following.
Dr. Scott Noegel will be our guest speaker, opening at 7 p.m. His topic will be "The Ark of the Covenant in the Light of Ancient Egypt." He will examine the Ark of the Covenant of the Old Testament and its Egyptian parallels. Dr. Noegel is a graduate of Cornell University in New York, and an associate professor of Hebrew Bible at the University of Washington's Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. This will mark his third appearance as a most interesting speaker at our meetings. A slide presentation will accompany his remarks, followed by an opportunity for questions. MASONS SHARE SPOTLIGHT IN HONORS TO SEATTLE PIONEER 'DOC' MAYNARD
One of the most colorful characters in the early growth of Seattle was David S. "Doc" Maynard, a Mason from Iowa who joined our young Lodge within weeks of receiving its charter. He was the primary force to rename the town of Duwamps, "Seattle."
On Saturday, April 19, members of St. John's joined others to pay tribute to Doc Maynard and to dedicate a new grave marker, complete with its original Square & Compasses, to replace the original ? long weathered and nearly unreadable.
An estimated gathering of 70-75 persons assembled under partly cloudy skies to witness tributes from Dan Kerege, leader of the local E Clampus Vitus Chapter which led the mission to replace the marker; City Councilman Peter Steinbrueck, Sunny Speidel, daughter of the late founder of the Seattle Underground Tour Bill Speidel; historian Walt Crowley, and great-great granddaughter of Seattle namesake Chief Sealth, Cecile Hansen. Leonard Garfield, representing the Museum of History and Industry, congratulated the efforts of local citizens to preserve the history of Seattle. The heirs of the Maynard family donated the original grave marker to the museum.
Nine Masons representing St. John's were in attendance, with Worshipful Master Terry Grove and Past Masters Ken Lane, Jr. and Richard Oslund closing the ceremony with a brief memorial service of Masonic flavor.
146th Annual Communication of Grand Lodge will be in Tacoma, June 12-14
June 4 Stated: Informal attire. Come dressed in the colors of your favorite baseball team.
