July 2003
From the East

Springtime is over! Summer is here!! School's out, and its party time!!! TIME to get on the road for those family outings or vacation(s). Time to attend or organize those various reunions. Time to work on that house or yard project.

The Mariners are in first place. Seattle is leading the majors in fan attendance and support. Last month we featured our first casual baseball night, which was well attended and supported by the brethren. We saw many teams and sports represented.

Our sponsorship of the three Northwest Little League teams is going very well. We sponsor teams in the Rookie (7-8 year olds); Minors (9-10 year olds) and Majors (11-12 year olds). This year our Masons Minors Team (WBro Ken Lane, Jr is one of the coaches) took 2nd place behind Lane Hardwood Floors. Congratulations to our past master WBro Jeff Lane and his league champions. The competitiveness and coaching of these young men is teaching excellent team cooperation and leadership qualities - and hopefully, we'll gain some future Masons from their ranks. In my attending some of these games, I found very positive feedback from the parents of the ballplayers. We are definitely making solid strides in the public relations area by our sponsorship and support of these athletic events.

On June 18th, we raised a new Entered Apprentice Mason and are hopeful to host a combined Fellowcraft Degree on Wednesday evening, July 23rd, with Doric Lodge No. 92. They initiated three EA's that same evening! When was the last time you attended a degree? Do you remember your obligation? If you are interested in participating, all you need to do is contact our lodge secretary or myself and we'll find something for you to do. The more the merrier. What's holding you back?

July 13th, eight St. John's members will play golf in the annual Lafayette Lodge No. 241 charity scramble golf tournament. On May 10th, we fielded 16 players in the King Solomon No. 60 fundraiser.

We have a fun agenda scheduled for our July 9th Herbs Night (casual Hawaiian attire). Next month we'll hold our annual Picnic at Nile on Saturday, August 16th. August Stated will be our scholarship night. September we'll be celebrating our 143rd Anniversary.

Please make TIME to join in fellowship, friendship and fraternalism at these future events. See you in lodge!

SUMMER MEETING FEATURES HERB'S NIGHT
2nd Wednesday in July; Ladies welcome!

I t seems to work so well, we're going to do it again! Or something like it. To acknowledge our fifth year returning to a 12-month Lodge, we are issuing a special invitation to join us at our July 9 meeting. This summer meeting will focus on our "snow bird" brethren, and is billed as "Herb's Night."

A special evening of entertainment and instruction will be held, beginning with dinner at 6pm, followed by the 7:30 business meeting. Much of the routine of the meeting will be eliminated, except for the necessary paying the bills. Throughout the evening, we will be honoring our brothers who have had little opportunity to join us in recent years.

That is why we are extending a special invitation to those who don't get out to Lodge more than once or twice a year. And to make it even a little more special, bring the ladies! "Herb's Night" was created to honor our members we seldom have the opportunity to meet, and was named after one of our "snow birds" who lived nine months of the year in Hawaii and three months in the Seattle area. For that reason, we will also dress less formally on that evening, and encourage all our brothers to dress in Hawaiian shirts and the ladies in mumu's or other casual attire.

Some Masonic education and instruction will be dispensed in an enjoyable fashion.

There'll be music and a little bit of "sing-along."

We expect to recognize a Brother for fifty years of Masonic membership.

The ladies are invited to join us for dinner and to share in the evening's activities.

We particularly want our snow birds and infrequent attendees to be a part of this. Please call the secretary,

VWBro. Jim Russell, at (206) 623-0261 if you can join us, so that we may know how many to expect for dinner.

Aloha!

ANNUAL FAMILY PICNIC AT NILE SLATED FOR SATURDAY, AUGUST 16

Mark your calendars, invite your friends and especially those who might be good candidates for Masonry and come to our annual St. John's Lodge No. 9 Family Picnic, Saturday, August 16. As in the past years, our picnic will be held at the Nile Temple picnic grounds, area "A." The Lodge will furnish the steaks, hot dogs and buns. You need only to bring a choice of one of the following: hot or cold vegetable, salad, dessert.

And, oh, yeah, your appetite!

See next issue of the Trestleboard for further details.

CELESTIAL LODGE CALLS BROTHERS HOME

We mourn the loss of these Brothers who have passed to the Celestial Lodge in 2003: Bros. Arthur "Art" F. Prentice, William Arthur Smith, Gordon L. Moe, Maurice "Nick" Field, Einar William Brastad, George P. Palady, Richard Alva Reeve, WBro. David Norman Carlsen. Thy days of toil on earth, my Brethren, are over. Ye have entered upon a greater field of labor and of love.

Thirteen members of St. John's attended the recent Grand Lodge meeting in Tacoma. MWBro. John McNab was elevated as Grand Master; RW John Keliher was elected to serve to JGW.

WATCH FOR THESE COMING EVENTS!

In July, we will have a fun-filled evening when our Stated Communication of July 9 will be focused on welcoming our "snow birds" and other members who have not been to Lodge for quite a while. Billed as "Herb's Night," we will be wearing Hawaiian shirts or other summer casual wear and enjoying a relaxed evening of business and entertainment. Bring the ladies!

On this Independence Day - FREEDOM TO ASSEMBLE

We live in the State of Washington - a state named after a Mason, in a nation who's capital is also so named. Such a rarity on our planet earth. We kneel and pray in thanksgiving for this freedom to assemble, while other Masons in certain lands are kneeling and praying in intercession that their lives are spared from the anti-masons' wrath.

Let us remember, in our celebrations, that freedom to assemble was rare before the birth of this young nation. Even today, there are anti-masons who work to gain the upper hand to outlaw Masonry.

Three months have elapsed since the Allied forces (both allies accept Masonry) toppled Saddam (an anti-mason). Has Masonry returned to Iraq? And when will it ever enjoy the status found in the US and UK? I mention this just to remind you that the freedoms we enjoy in the US, even after the Morgan case, are the exception and not the rule. -- JR

EUREKA CELEBRATES 130 YEARS

Eureka Lodge No. 20 will be hosting an open house at the Museum of History and Industry, Friday evening, August 29.

The Smithsonian Institute of Washington, D.C., brings to the museum the only West Coast showing of an outstanding display of our American Presidents. Among the many fascinating displays is one of the original signed copies of the Declaration of Independence. That evening will honor the many American Presidents who were Masons.

Eureka Lodge will be celebrating its 130th Anniversary on this occasion. St. John's is one of its original sponsors. Reservations by August 10 are a must for food and beverage planning. Contact our brother and Secretary VWBro. Tom Rutledge at 206 533-0206 trs.ink@earthlink.net.

SABIT & RODA BEC RECEIVE 4-YEAR SCHOLARSHIPS FROM GATES FOUNDATION
In 1992 and 1993, more than 10,000 orphaned children ranging in age from babies to 18 years walked from southern Sudan north to Ethiopia, then all the way back to Kenya. The children were fleeing the war and slaughter in their villages. Although their number eventually rose to 15,000, less than 5,000 of the original refugees survived the round trip to United Nations' sanctuary in Kenya. The rest were murdered, died of starvation or were eaten by lions and alligators!

For the last two years, St. John's has helped in a small way to sponsor two of these children. Then-fifteen year old Sabit Bec (pronounced Sa-beet Bashe) addressed our Lodge and told his story. He is a remarkable young man, approaching seven feet tall, who with his sister is doing quite well in school. Both Sabit & Roda Bec have recently been named Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation scholarship recipients. This is worth $80-100,000 if they attend in-state universities, or $200,000 each if they elect to attend private schools. They have been assigned a mentor (as high schoolschool juniors) who will remain with them on their scholastic paths for the next five years.
