August 2003
From the East

Is it August already? Based upon our hot weather, I thought last month was August! Given our lack of moisture or rainfall, please be
extremely cautious around those back yard barbeques and campfires when enjoying our great outdoors. Remember to keep your yards and plants well watered, keeping in mind our need to conserve our natural resources.

Hopefully, many of you have had time to take in all the Pacific Northwest has to offer. We are truly blessed with Evergreens, plant life, numerous rivers and streams, Puget Sound, recreational facilities, parks and our cool summer nights, not to mention our splendid scenic mountain ranges consisting of the Olympics and Cascades.

If you have already taken that summer vacation,- welcome back! If you're on your way out of town - no need to worry, we'll leave the light on for you.

Last month, we held our annual Herb's Night for our many rusty Masons and Snowbirds. Music and entertainment was enjoyed by all.

On July 23rd, we hosted and raised some new Fellowcraft Masons in concert with Doric Lodge.

Our August 6th stated meeting will honor our scholarship recipients and their immediate families. Our line officers will return to our normal tuxedo attire. With all the activities scheduled, it's hard to believe that some lodges go dark during the summer months. Be proud of that fact that you are a member of one of the largest lodges in the State of Washington, and in all probability, one of the most philanthropic lodges in this grand jurisdiction. Our financial support to our many concordant bodies is well recognized by our sister lodges. However, we still need the involvement of our membership to mentor the leadership in these worthy youth organizations.

This month, we'll again host the Summer Picnic at the Nile Golf Course on Saturday, August 16th. To make sure we have enough steaks on the grill, please make sure that your intentions to attend are made known. Fun and games are planned for everyone.

Next month, on September 13th, we will celebrate our 143rd Anniversary at the Seattle Design Center. In addition to friendship, fellowship and fraternalism, we will feature a well-known Elvis Presley impersonator for your enjoyment.

Please remember - reservations to attend the Picnic and Anniversary are required. There will be limited seating to our Anniversary Celebration, so get your desires known so we can accommodate you.

Your officer line is looking forward to seeing you in lodge. Until then, enjoy what's left of the summer.

Terry Grove, Master

St. John's Lodge No. 9 will celebrate its 143rd Anniversary on Saturday evening, September 13! Dinner and entertainment at the Seattle Design Center will feature a well-known Elvis impersonator. Elvis starred in 33 successful films and sold over one billion records, more than any other artist.

The National Debt In 1789, thirty-two year old Alexander Hamilton, one of our early American Freemasons, became Secretary of the Treasury. The national debt was more than fifty million dollars and the U.S. government did not have a stable revenue source. The states collectively owed an additional twenty-five million. Bro. Hamilton initiated a very successful (albeit controversial) plan to assume all state debts, establish tariffs, and start a federal bank. Under his leadership, on July 9, 1795, the U.S. paid off its debt and significantly increased foreign investment.

The current U.S. national debt is 6.7 trillion dollars. Your share is over twenty-three thousand.

SHARED BIRTHDATES

Eureka Lodge No. 20 was formed by twenty Masons of Seattle, joining in a petition recommended by St. John's Lodge, and presented to the Grand Master on February 1, 1873. Their first meeting was held on the 7th of February, 1873, in the hall of our Lodge. The Grand Lodge, in session on September 4, 1873, authorized its charter to be issued, giving it that day as its birthday, and together the two Lodges share the same birthday.

TRIVIA ANSWER: All four were early pioneers in the automobile industry and were Masons.
