From the East
Is time going by fast or what? Can you believe we're already into the Holiday Season?
Last month we even tried to recapture an hour when daylight savings time ended. Earlier, we served the residents of the Masonic Retirement Center oyster dinner for the 67th consecutive year.
| We held a planning meeting to discuss the probable pending sale of Scottish Rite Center (SRC) and how we view ourselves as a part of this fraternity. The general consensus was that St. John's wants to stay within the defined city limits of Seattle. Efforts need to be made to encourage our inactive brethren to join us in our future labors. In addition, approaches to gain new members were discussed. Greeters will welcome visiting brethren and mentors assigned to new brethren to assist them in their journey through our gentle craft. | | |
We participated in the annual District 5 Youth Halloween Party at the SRC and will end the month with the District 5 reception for the Most Worshipful Grand Master.
We will again focus on change when we elect our line officers for the upcoming 2004 year. It is also our opportunity to recognize the prior contributions of our Past Masters. Our featured speaker will be MWBro. Ken Robinson, who will be sharing his thoughts with us.
We have called the SRC home for over 20 years. What will we do if or when the building is sold? Where will we go? Do we seek accommodation with another existing lodge or do we find our own facility? A committee will be created at our stated meeting to explore our future options. If you are interested, please contact either myself at 425-337-7134 terryagrove@comcast.net or our lodge secretary Jim Russell at 206-623-0261 stjohns9@msn.com to indicate your availability and willingness to be assigned to this important committee.
My year as your Worshipful Master is quickly coming to an end. My travels have been extensive. Our finances have improved, the future of our lodge is solid. What is really needed is participation by all of our capable brethren to share the load.
As always - your officers look forward to your attendance in lodge. Dinner, as supervised by our Junior Warden, is free - along with our fellowship, friendship and fraternalism. Please join with us as we honor our Past Masters and elect our 2004 officers.

PAST MASTERS NIGHT, ELECTIONS, PGM ROBINSON SPEAKER
ALL FEATURED AT NOVEMBER 5 STATED MEETING!
Past Grand Master MWBro. Ken Robinson will be our featured speaker at this month's Stated Meeting as we also honor our Past Masters of four lodges which incarnate St. John's Lodge No. 9. Officers for 2004 will also be elected. This Stated Communication will be Wednesday, November 5. Dinner will be served at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center at 6 p.m. Please invite your Masonic friends and brothers to join us on this special evening.
Once again it is that time of year when we honor the Past Masters of St. John's Lodge No. 9. The presence of these beloved brothers is particularly desired as we recognize their achievements for the year they served this Lodge and the Lodges of Ionic No. 90, Elliott Bay No. 257, and Roosevelt No 229. What a heritage and what a history! These four Lodges produced 356 different Masters, of which 67 Past Masters are still a living legacy of our Lodge! In addition, 21 other Past Masters are affiliated with our Lodge.
Our principal speaker MWBro. Robinson served as Grand Master in 1993-94, and serves on the Grand Lodge Jurisprudence Committee. He is a Past Master of Occidental Lodge No. 72.
At this meeting we also will be electing officers and a Trustee for the next term. We anticipate that Senior Warden Bro. Michael Rust will be elevated to the East. He is 46 years old and has two children. His wife Alexandra was the principal author of our recently published history, volume II.
VWBro. Chuck Brockway will be concluding his term as Trustee and has announced his interest in another four-year term. Also, WBro. Hans Wehl has announced his availability for that office. Our Senior Deacon, Bro. Doug Lidz, has indicated his desire to step aside so that he may focus on his business career. Our Junior Deacon Bro. Mark Campbell is very capable and available to advance to the South.
For our members, local transportation can be arranged to attend any of our meetings.
THANK YOU NOTE FROM MRC RESIDENT Dear St. John's Brothers: Thank you so much for the oyster stew on October 8 (Wed.). It provided a comfortable warm feeling you-know-where! (P.S. The chocolates were great - I "passed" in favor of STEW!) Thanks most for the visit and fellowship - it's a nice way to resurrect fond memories and meet new friends. Of course, a perfect finale was the opportunity to hear Dave "Twinkle fingers" Julian at the keyboard. Jeannette & I can't travel much any more and she thoroughly enjoyed hearing Dave again!!. Sincerely Chuck King (@MRC)

ST. JOHN'S LODGE COMMITTEE EMBARKS ON LONG - RANGE PLANNING
Several members of the Lodge are meeting to identify the long range goals of our Lodge, and will be asking for everyone's thoughts and help to achieve these objectives. Our first meeting was held in mid-October. Those members of the Lodge who want to be involved should contact the Master or the Secretary to offer assistance. We will be looking at a wide range of concerns, including membership, meeting days and location, programs and activities, communication methods, and levels of community action. This group will open the window to our future as a Lodge!
THREE DECLARE FOR OFFICE OF JUNIOR GRAND WARDEN (2004)
Three candidates have declared for the office of Junior Grand Warden for the Washington Grand Lodge, elections to be held at the Annual Grand Meeting next June in Wenatchee. They are VWBros. Charles McQuery, Michael Sanders, and John Sleeth. All three were candidates last year, in addition to VWBro. Charles Davis and RW John Keliher, who was elected to that position
TEEN FEED III COMING IN NOVEMBER
Brothers, we have been given Monday, November 17th as a night to repeat service in our community. Thanks to the St. John's Teen Feed crew, approximately 40 teens were well fed last February. The University Congregational Church provides a place to eat each evening, as volunteers offer meals to the homeless teenagers.
WBro. Skip Albertson will handle the shopping, and the rest of the St. John's crew will cook and serve. The young people are most pleased to receive a rare dinner of steak, mashed potatoes, vegetables and pie for dessert. We were told last time that this was the first meat served in months!
Bro. Jim Wold is calling for any brother who wants to assist with the next Teen Feed in the University District to contact him at 425 357-6867 or woldfamily@msn.com. This will be our third participation within the past year.
SQUARE & COMPASSES MAY SHOW UP ON AUTO LICENSE PLATES
We have an opportunity to market Masonry on personalized license plates. Petitions are being circulated to request the State of Washington to make license plates available with the Masonic Square & Compasses. For the State to consider the request, 2,000 signatures need to be submitted showing enough interest. Having one's name on the petition does not obligate the Brother to purchase the license plate. That can only be done by 1) once the State approves, 2) the auto owner making the appropriate application on his license tab renewal form. This initial special license plate will cost an additional $40.00, added to the basic license plate cost, $28.00 of which will be made available to the Scottish Rite Center for Childhood Language Disorders.
Come to Lodge and add your signature to the petition!
WHY IS A MASTER ADDRESSED AS "WORSHIPFUL"
Few Masonic matters are less understood by the non-Masonic public than this. The word "worchyppe" or "worchyp" is Old English, and means "greatly respected." In the Wycliffe Bible, "Honor thy father and thy mother" appears as "Worchyp thy fadir and thy modir." English and Canadian mayors are still addressed, "Your Worship." In some of the Old Constitutions of Masonry is the phrase, "Every Mason shall prefer his elder and put him to worship."
"Worship," therefore, in modern Masonry continues an ancient word meaning "greatly respected."
