January Stated Communication

Although the second Wednesday of the month is not St. John's Lodge No. 9's usual meeting night it happens twice a year. January's stated being one of those times. Even though the afternoon was not the usual one, the Brethren of the Lodge turned out in fair numbers for WM Mike Rust's first meeting as Master of the Lodge.

Before the monthly meal VWB David Julian said a prayer. Steve (Steve's Cafe and Expresso) prepared an excellent Lasagna and Bobbi served it with a salad that melted in the mouth. What a meal! Conversation among those present seemed to hover around the subject of the Scottish Rite's impending sale of the building and what the Lodge will do for the future.

Present at our dinner this month was Matthew Luedke, State Master Councilor of Washington DeMolay. He is also a member of the Grand Lodge of Washington at Frank S. Land Lodge No. 313. He came to make a presentation to the Lodge following the meal and preceding the monthly Stated Communication.

Immediately after supper Worshipful Master Rust asked that all announcements be given at the Dinner table and not left to the end of the Stated Communication. This is how St. John's Lodge No. 9 will deal with announcements of upcoming events and meetings for at least this year.

After the meal the Worshipful Master invited everyone to adjourn to the Lodgeroom where Bro. Luedke presented a wonderful talk on the Demolay Lights. He told us that the presentation he delivered was written by an active DeMolay and that he had to learn it and present it to a panel of judges before he was able to present it to the public. It was a very moving presentation.

Following his presentation Bro. Luedke asked the Lodge to help Washington DeMolay with the purchase of a sound system as the one they have been using is no longer operable. The amount needed is considerable and is out of the reach of Washington DeMolay to purchase. The Trustees will discuss this need at their next meeting and will bring their recommendation to the Lodge.

The guests then left and WM Michael Rust opened Lodge on the Fellowcraft Degree for the Monthly Stated Communication. Minutes were read, the Treasurer's report given and the usual business of the Lodge was concluded in a very timely fashion.

The WM told the Lodge that committee work is extremely important and that he expects the entire membership to
contribute to the success of the Lodge. In order to accomplish this he will be contacting the membership individually and finding out where they will best be able to conribute. Committee work covers every range of interest and the Lodge is comfortable with knowing that whatever the interest of the member there is a committee which will encompass that interest.

He then had Bro. Ken Wehl escorted to the East where Bro. Wehl was installed as Senior Deacon for the year.

Two memorial scrolls were read and the Officers and Chaplain delivered the Lodge's remembrance to our departed Brothers.

The WM then had VWB Chuck Brockway, the chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee, give a presentation on the makeup, goals, shortrange breakdown of sub committees, and a list of subcommittee heads. VWB Brockway asked for input from the brethren as to what type of Lodge St. John's wishes to be in one to thirty years, what type of facility would the Lodge like to have for meetings and other uses, what location the Lodge would be most comfortable being in, and some other particulars for the committee to begin working with.

Other committee reports were not heard as some have no input at this time and others need to be reworked to help the Lodge realize its goals. This will change as the year progresses and it is expected that through the work of the committees the Lodge will become much more active in making itself useful to both the membership and the community around it.

WM Rust announced that there will be refreshments following each Stated Communication for the rest of his term as he is confident that the business of the Lodge will be concluded in a timely manner and the membership will have sufficient time to enjoy the refreshment and to visit with one another.

Lodge was closed at about nine o'clock PM. Peace and harmony prevailed, as it always does, at St. John's Lodge No. 9.
