From the East

I'm going to let all of you in on a little known Masonic secret. Well it's probably known to many Past Masters and maybe a few others, but I sure didn't know it when I moved from the West to the East. There's not enough time in a day to accomplish half of what a Master wishes to do, let alone should do, to move his lodge in the direction he dreams it should and still be involved with his family and - for 40 hours/week - pretend to work. I am truly inspired and awed by those PMs. of St. John's who have performed this duty with such notable organization, skill and tact.

We have a very busy schedule for the next few months; there should be something for every brother, his family and friends:

Bro. Jim Wold has done a tremendous job in organizing a weekend of camping at the Masonic Park in Granite Falls. (See the notice elsewhere for additional info, phone numbers and dates.)

Our annual Herb's night stated meeting on July 14th is fast approaching. It's a great time to find that extra loud Hawaiian, bowling or 60s tie-dye shirt languishing in the closet and show it off among friends. Come see what the
Junior Warden has in store for dinner. There have been a few creative rumors circulating about the menu.

A first degree is scheduled for the 21st of July. It's said you never forget your first time.... so let me officially invite each and every brother to help bring our newly obligated brother to Masonic light. I can't express how strongly I believe that every candidate be given the best possible degree that we can muster. Be a part of passing the torch of Masonry from one generation to the next

Our family picnic is scheduled for the 15th of August (though I understand there may be a change) and we'll have a great selection of food and entertainment for the whole family. Don't miss it! I look forward to seeing each of you at any of our events the next few months.

Michael Rust, Master

Ladies, come join us this month for dinner, entertainment and fellowship! Wednesday, July 14

Washington Monument
The cornerstone of the Washington Monument was laid on July 4th 1848 by the Grand Master of Washington DC, MWBro. Benjamin B. French. There were more than 20,000 people in attendance. Grand Master French wore the same Masonic apron and sash that had belonged to President Washington, and wielded the same Mason's gavel that had been used by him when he laid the cornerstone of the U. S. Capitol on September 18, 1793. Grand Master French applied the Masonic square, level, and plumb to the northeast corner and pronounced it sound. The stone weighed 24,500 pounds
and contained a zinc plated time capsule. The capsule holds statistics on the city of Washington as well as the nation. It also holds coins, currency, a Bible, sixty different newspapers, and the first "Program of Organization of the Smithsonian Institution."

Independence Day Observation

Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, stands on land purchased by Bro. William Allen, Grand Master of PA. The ground was staked by Bro. Edmond Wolley, a Mason. Bro. Thomas Boude, the brick mason who laid the brick for the building, was the first Secretary of St. John's Lodge of Philadelphia and later Deputy Grand Master. Bro. Benjamin Franklin laid the cornerstone while Grand Master (1734) with the assistance of St. John's Lodge. Bro. Andrew McNair of Philadelphia rang the bell to call the populace on July 8, 1776, to hear the reading of the Declaration of Independence. The Liberty Bell cracked in 1835 when it tolled the death of Bro. Chief Justice John Marshall, Past Grand Master of Virginia.

MASONIC PARK CAMPOUT July 9-10-11

Several Brothers from St. John's and their families will spend a weekend of fun at the Masonic Park July 9-10-11. The kids will enjoy the newly installed playground equipment and the adults will have a good time enjoying the great outdoors. There will be a shared potluck on Saturday evening. Tents and RV spaces are available, or just take advantage of covered shelter to accommodate sleeping bags and air mattresses. An evening campfire will put the finishing touches on a full day of family and brotherly sharing.

The Granite Falls Masonic Park is located 4.5 miles east of the city of Granite Falls, in Snohomish County, on the "mountain loop" highway.

We will be in and around the big kitchen shelter. The fee is $6 a head per night to camp, children under 12 are free; $5 per person per day to picnic. The Lodge will pick up these fees for the first 30 to arrive and register. There are 5 electrical hook ups in this area. The hook ups are $10 per night and the cost will be the responsibility of those who use them. The big shelter is located conveniently next to the bathrooms and new play structure that we helped fund and construct. The big shelter has a stove and refrigerator also.

Potluck 5pm Saturday

Bro. Jim Wold is making the arrangements for what we hope will be an annual event if well received. Plan to bring your own food for the weekend, with an eye to a community potluck at 5pm Saturday. Supply your own entrée and share a salad, dessert or other. Those who come up just for the day are invited to join the Saturday meal. Bring something to share!

Shopping Tips

Jim adds the following: "A couple tips I would like to pass on to those who have not yet been there. There is a Red Apple market in Granite Falls for shopping; also a few restaurants which offer pizza, sandwiches, and hamburgers. We like to shop in Lake Stevens right off Hwy 9. It has a better selection of everything and more restaurants for take out.

"The park has done a nice job adding power to its campsites and we have about 5 or 6 powered sites that come with the big shelter. I'm sure we can find others nearby if needed. Firewood is provided by the park for free and they have normal bathrooms and hot showers.

"I thought it would be neat to have a potluck that Saturday evening so we can get together for fellowship. Does anyone have a karaoke machine?

"Feel free to contact me [425 357-6867 or woldfamily@msn.com] with any questions you may have."

SUMMER MEETING FEATURES HERB'S NIGHT
2nd Wednesday in July; Ladies welcome!

A special evening of entertainment and instruction will be held Wednesday, July 14, beginning with complementary dinner at 6pm and followed by the 7:30 business meeting. Much of the routine of the meeting will be eliminated, except for the necessary paying the bills. A ballot will be spread for one petitioner This summer meeting will focus on our "snow bird" brethren, and is billed as "Herb's Night."

That is why we are extending a special invitation to those who don't get out to Lodge more than once or twice a year. And to make it even a little more special, bring the ladies! "Herb's Night" was created to honor our members we seldom have the opportunity to meet, and was named after one of our "snow birds" who lived nine months of the year in Hawaii and three months in the Seattle area. Dress will be casual, with a special emphasis on "outlandish American tourist." Our own Grand Organist VWBro. David Julian and wife Beverly will perform in their usual spirited style.

Please call our Lodge number 206 623-0261 or email stjohns9@seattlemasons.org for your dinner reservations. Some Masonic education and instruction will be dispensed in an enjoyable fashion. We expect to recognize a Brother for fifty years of Masonic membership.

The ladies are invited to join us for dinner and to share in the evening's activities.

We particularly want our snow birds and infrequent attendees to be a part of this.

Operation Phone Home

Operation Phone Home is a campaign to provide prepaid international phone calling cards to our military men and women serving overseas. It will be an ongoing effort as long as American Military Personnel serve overseas, particularly in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Balkans.

Anyone wishing to participate in this program may send a donation marked Operation Phone Home to the Masonic Service Association, 8120 Fenton Street, Silver Spring, MD 20910-4785. All of the monies received will go to this program and an accounting will be made by MSA at the end of each calendar

Our new MWGM Sat Tashiro will install the new officer line, assisted by WBro. Terry Grove and VWBro. David Campbell.
