August 2004
From the East

I've taken a great deal of pleasure reading a recent theme of Masonic e-mail that has come across my server the last week or so. It seems we are -or may be- considered dinosaurs, but I wonder to what depth the many writers have considered this term? One working definition is, "any of various extinct, often large reptiles."

I somehow doubt I'd be writing this column if I were extinct, yet there's no question that our membership has both aged and decreased the last few decades. Perhaps a different view is that we have returned to the size we once were before my father's generation felt such a strong need to unite into one sacred band of brothers and friends. Times change, people's perceived needs change, societal mores change, but our core values have not become extinct.

There's another very strong possibility that one branch of the dinosaur tree is still with us in the avian world. It's not so feather-brained a
thesis that only a pigeon-toed, flighty person would land on. It has, with increasing fossil evidence, gained a strong following the last decade or two. So perhaps we are like the current manifestation of dinosaurs - the birds- who do not rule the earth (except in a Hitchcock film) and can be found on all seven continents with a much more successful record of adaptation then their predecessors.

If you have ever had the pleasure of working with and seen the dedication of so many of our brothers then the term large would not be amiss. Not large in girth, but in presence, dedication, integrity and excellence. Our officers along with many past masters and brothers are working daily to give our lodge the breadth of service and fellowship that may diminish, change and even evolve, but will never go extinct. I can honestly say I have had the pleasure of working with men of great if not large stature and I am a better man for choosing this route.

I look forward to seeing all of you at our degrees, stated meetings and August picnic.

BOOKS OF INTEREST
DaVinci Code - Angels and Demons

Those are the names of two best-selling books written by Dan Brown. These two books feature Freemasonry prominently in their plots, and The DaVinci Code was a #1 bestseller. Both books are very fast paced and exciting to read. A movie version of The DaVinci Code is under way.

FIFTY YEARS OF MASONRY

Bros. Al Thornton and Isaac Solam were honored for fifty years of Masonic service at our Herb's Night, last month. Others reaching that honor this year are Bros. Lawrence Watkins, Henry Wells, Jack Varon, and Walter Wright, Jr.
