September Stated Communication
Pictures by WB Charles Tupper
It seems that Summer is past for this year and the membership of St. John's Lodge No. 9 gathered on an overcast September first evening for the monthly repast and Stated Communication.

At six o'clock those Brethren who were not out of town sat down for an excellent steak dinner.

Bobbi is still wearing a brace on her leg but tells us that she takes it off at home now and will be fully mobile before the next Stated Communication. Good news indeed. The steak dinner was enjoyed by all and following the meal announcements were heard and all repaired to the Lodge room for a presentation by two elementary school Principals and an elementary school Librarian.

Ms. Debbie MacDonald (librarian) and Ms. Marsha Boyd (principal) of John Rogers Elementary School began the evenings after dinner activities by telling the Lodge about the effect that St. John's Lodge No. 9's funding of the Accelerated Reading Program has on their school. The ladies were extremely proud of the achievements of the students and we heard about some truly astounding results from our funding and the school's faculty support of this increasingly important program.

Following these ladies was Mr. Hawkins Cramer (principal) of Cedar Way Elementary School. He told the Lodge that the support of St. John's Lodge No. 9 to their school library and the accelerated reading program is extremely important to their school and that we are doing the right thing by supporting public education in the Seattle area. He is very proud of the
strides being made by the students in his school for which this program supplies the tools.

St. John's Lodge supplies the funding for the Accelerated Reading Program and also funds books for the libraries of these schools. The help is invaluable to these schools as they do not have the funds for this program or funds to adequately supply their own libraries with the needed books for all students. Our support is filling the shelves of these libraries with materials for all grades and is supplying the software for the students to test their comprehension of those books which they read. To date we have purchased 8,000 books and the related software for these schools.

Of all the programs that our Lodge supports this support may prove to be the most beneficial to the future of our community.

Following these presentations Lodge was opened on the Entered Apprentice degree. Our District Deputy, VWB Mike Davis was introduced and given the public grand honors. The regular business of the Lodge was quickly dispensed with and the Lodge approved the budget changes which appeared in the September Trestleboard. An amendment to change the amount for the Company Store to $1,100.00 was also passed.

A resolution to fund the repair of a roof at the Royal Arch Park was approved as was a resolution to send DeMolay's to their Leadership Conference.

The Lodge voted to permanenty remit the dues for the Brother who was involved in the devastating automobile accident last month and reports were heard about his progress at the nursing home where he presently resides. More information is available from the Lodge Secretary. The Brother appreciates visits from members when they are in the area and he needs all the support that we can give him at this trying time.

96 year old VWB Sam Harding is undergoing therapy at the Arden Care Center and is in poor health.

The District 5 Reception for the Grand Master will be Friday, October 15. The Halloween Party, to be held at the Scottish Rite and sponsored by the Lodge Officers and Members Association (LOMA) for District 5 will be needing volunteers to set up, chaperone, and clean up.

WBro. Hans Wehl remarked that he thought the August picnic was outstanding, and particularly acknowledged chairman Bro. Jim Wold for its success. The families had a great time. The change to picnic area B was well-suited for our needs, with close proximity to slides and swings. Bro. Wold was accorded a round of applause for his efforts. He in turn named many of the brethren who assisted and thanked them for their contributions.

VWBro. Chuck Brockway brought the plight of a family suffering some medical problems to the attention of the lodge. The father is undergoing treatment for cancer on the brain, and a daughter has just been diagnosed with leukemia. The Master will dip into his Master's Charity fund to provide $500 for relief.

Following some announcements and comments Lodge was closed just after 9PM, Peace and Harmony prevailing as it always does at St. John's Lodge No. 9.
