November 2004
From the East

It's hunting season again so here goes an oldie but goodie. It seems one of our brothers had a new dog named SW to hunt with. It was a pretty young pup and just didn't have all the skills to handle the hard work needed in the field. Lots of potential in that young dog, but it would take another year to reach that sublime degree of skill needed to handle all the rigors expected of it.

Our brother then decided to borrow a hound named WM from a fellow lodge brother. Now here was a dog with great potential and still young enough to handle the requirements placed upon it. The dog however had different ideas. It seems the hound wanted the hunter to attend all its needs and desires. In short this dog just wouldn't hunt, but it sure was good at delegating.

Finally our brother borrowed a dog named PM. The dog seemed well seasoned, highly experienced and looked to our brother for leadership. Funny thing though, the dog just
could not stop from correcting every move the hunter made. It seemed he had many years more experience then the hunter and was happy to let our brother know how it used to be done.

Our brother then chose to do his hunting at Safeway.

I'd like to take a few lines to thank brothers: Terry Grove, Ken Wehl, Richard Oslund, Jim Russell, Morgan Jones and David Julian for their excellent work at our 67th annual and possibly last MRC oyster feed. They truly brought Masonic brotherly love and charity to our friends residing at the center.

Let's also remember the Thanksgiving and Christmas season is rapidly approaching. St John's has been very generous with its charity to a number of families in our region and to three families based at Ft. Lewis. We are again in need of volunteers to help shop and deliver food. Also, take a moment to reflect on any brother, family, widow or neighbor who may be in need of our help, then please let me know of their needs at our next stated meeting, by phone or e-mail.

I look forward to seeing each and every one of you at Past Masters night this November 3rd.

Mike Rust, WM

OFFICER ELECTIONS; PAST MASTERS FETED IN NOVEMBER
Long Range Planning, Sea Scouts to make a full evening

Our brothers won't want to miss November's Stated. New officers will be elected to serve in 2005 and our Past Masters will be given a special recognition for their long and loyal service to the lodge. Local members of the Sea Scouts will also be our guests on this special evening. This Stated Communication will be Wednesday, November 3. Dinner will be served at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center at 6 p.m.

The Master has invited Bro. Bill Werner of the Grand Lodge Long Range Planning Committee to complete the evening and to infuse new life in our own long range planning.

Once again it is that time of year when we honor the Past Masters of St. John's Lodge No. 9. We are pleased to have these revered brothers join us as we recognize their achievements for the year they served this lodge and our consolidated lodges of Ionic No. 90, Elliott Bay No. 257, and Theodore Roosevelt No 229. What a legacy and what a history! Sixty living Past Masters have served these four lodges. A full house is always a happy occasion at ceremonies such as this, so brothers, please join us. As is our tradition, a select core of Past Masters led by WBro. Terry Grove will close lodge.

At that meeting we also will be electing officers and a Trustee for the next term. We anticipate that Brother Joseph Lund, our Senior Warden, will be elevated to the East. Bro. Lund has been a member of the fraternity and this Lodge since 1998, and was a part of the first one-day class in Washington to receive the three degrees. He is 37 years old and has two children. He also serves as a Pack leader for his son's Cub Scout Troop. An open installation of officers will be Saturday morning, December 11, at 10 a.m. We welcome and encourage families and guests.

Offices open for election will be the Master, Wardens, Treasurer, Secretary and one Trustee. Any member who is proficient as a Master Mason is eligible to be elected to one of these offices. WBro. Allan Pinch (1993) will be concluding his term as a Trustee and may be seeking re-election. WBro. Hans Wehl (1968) and WBro. Terry Grove (2003) have also expressed interest. Our Senior Deacon, Bro. Ken Wehl, has indicated his desire to step back so that he may focus on his business career and to get a little more Masonic "seasoning." WBro. Charles Tupper is more than capable and available for the South.

2005 DUES St. John's dues for 2005 will be $12, and are payable by December 31 of this year. Those who have been members of the Fraternity for 40 years, are Life Members, or who have served as Master of this Lodge have already received their cards.

PILLER OF PROGRESS 'FAMILY' AWARD PRESENTED BY GRAND LODGE TO ST. JOHN'S

Eleven members of St. John's attended last month's District 5 reception for our Grand Master, M\W\ Satoru Tashiro. University Lodge No. 141 acted as the host lodge. St. John's was honored to receive a Pillar of Progress award for promoting family involvement.

Recent surveys have shown that time has become an extremely limited commodity resulting from the pressures of our busy society. Accordingly, men are reluctant to give up the time spent with their family, and the traditional Masonic meeting is a competitor for a brother's available leisure time. In order to make Masonry attractive to men of high quality, Grand Lodge encourages lodges to include the family into our Masonic activities whenever possible.

The time spent in Masonic brotherhood should, to a certain extent, fulfill a brother's needs as a Mason, yet, concurrently satisfy his wishes to be with his family or to meet their needs through his Masonic association.

Attending the reception from our lodge were David Campbell, Terry Grove, David Julian, Gale Kenney, Morgan Jones, Richard Mecartea, Richard Oslund, Jim Russell, Michael Rust, Jim Wold, and Darrel Womack.

OLDSTERS' EYES TWINKLE AT MRC wink! wink!

Thanks to those who helped to brighten the day for our Masonic brothers and sisters at the Masonic Retirement Center. Our final oyster dinner, after completing 67 years of such, was well received. For the sake of the ladies, Bro. Frank Cushman was limited to two bowls of delicious oyster stew! Assisting with the visitation of residents in their rooms
and serving the stew were Master Michel Rust and his wife Alexandra, Morgan Jones, Richard Oslund, Terry Grove and Jim Russell.

VW David Julian entertained at the piano before and during dinner. Bro. Ken Wehl astounded all with his amusing patter and magic following dinner.

Our congratulations to two young members of our lodge for their successful passing of the Washington State Bar examinations. Bros. Nick Mitchell and Mike Gustafson have worked diligently toward careers in law. Last year Bro. John DuWors passed the bar and is now working in the Los Angeles area.

YOUTH HALLOWEEN PARTY:

There will be fun and games for a youth Halloween Party at the Scottish Rite, Saturday, October 30, from 7-10pm. St. John's and other lodges in District 5 are asked to provide chaperones and adult assistance for the evening. DJ music, dancing, costume contests, games and wholesome fun will help to make this Halloween season a real success! Photos, pizza, popcorn and small prizes will be available. Contact Terry Grove (425) 337-7134 terrygrove@comcast.net if you can help and want to have some fun! Bring the kids!

LODGE BROTHERS HOST TEEN FEED

We had over two dozen volunteers at last week's Teen Feed! That's an incredible show of support for one of our lodge charities. WBro. Skip Albertson initially introduced us to this worthy cause. Bro. Jim Wold has carried the torch the last two times. "What a great dinner," was overheard from several of the homeless teens.

Thanks to all who participated (Jim Wold, Terry Grove, Mark and Katy Campbell, Hans Wehl and his wife Sharon and daughter Robin and her husband Clyde, Gale Kenney and his wife Peggy, Iain Cameron and his wife Angela Williams and daughter Amber, Nick Mitchell, Chris Carney, Charlie and wife Karen Tupper, Ken Lane Jr. and wife Joyce and daughter Sarah and son Kenney, Richard Oslund, Tad Dodge, George Rine, Matt Vasey, Daryl Womack).

Walter F. Meier Lodge of Research

Walter F. Meier Lodge of Research will hear an address by WBro. Gerald Ward on October 28. "150 Years of Masonry in Washington State" focuses on the accomplishments of many great Masons of Washington that have contributed to the state.

THE MASONIC SERVICE BUREAU

The Masonic Service Bureau receives many requests for wheelchairs, and issues a call for any unused chairs to be donated so that brethren and widows have the opportunity to use this hospital equipment. Chairs borrowed from the Bureau in the past and no longer needed should be returned. The Bureau may be reached at 1-800-600-5544.
