December 2004
From the East

T he year has flown by so swiftly that I can barely remember half the tasks I wanted to perform, and even those were only half completed.(Batting .250 isn't too bad for most rookies.)

It was a great honor and privilege to have M.W. Sat Tashiro attend and assist in the festivities of our Past Masters Night. I truly enjoyed the evening more than any other in recent memory. The brotherly love, respect and excellence of all those in attendance was magnificent.

As it's my last chance to rant and rave, I'd like to paraphrase the eight degrees of charity as codified by Maimonides (1135 - 1204):

1. Give only grudgingly.
2. Give willingly, but less than is appropriate.
3. Give only after being asked.
4. Give before being asked.
5. Give so the donor does not know who the recipient is.
6. Give so the recipient doesn't know who the donor is.
7. Give so that neither the donor or recipient knows the identity of the other.
8. Help the poor to rehabilitate themselves by lending, employing or giving them work, for in this way the end is achieved without any loss of self respect.

Keep this list in mind in your day to day affairs and more especially when working in lodge - and let us always reach toward the highest. I find it all too easy to miss the true meaning and goal of charity when I fail to consult this list. Remember every human being has a claim upon your kind offices.

I'd like to thank each and every one of you for your support this last year; you've made my year as Master both rewarding and extremely fulfilling. I leave you in the hands of a true and trusted friend. Arise, follow your new Master and fear no danger.

Mike Rust, WM

Lodge Night comes early this month! (December 1)
NEXT STATED MEETING TO ADOPT 2005 BUDGET

Master Michael Rust invites all Masons to share in our customary 6 p.m. dinner preceding our 7:30 Stated Communication, December 1. The operating and charity budgets for 2005 will be presented for adoption at this meeting. Master-elect Joseph Lund has drawn up a budget that anticipates $25,000 to be distributed for scholarships, over $72,000 for charities, and $145,905 for operations. Following dinner and prior to the meeting, DeMolays and their advisors from Merle Luther Chapter (Black Diamond) will tell us about their activities. Two petitions for membership will receive action. Also, at least one additional petition will be read for the first time.

2005 DUES St. John's dues for 2005 will be $12, and are payable by December 31 of this year. Those who have been members of the Fraternity for 40 years, are Life Members, or who have served as Master of this Lodge have already received their cards

PAST MASTERS

Last month we honored our Past Masters and affiliated Past Masters. These brothers have toiled in the quarries, climbed the mountain, and returned to labor for the lodge and our fraternity. What's the difference between a Past Master and an affiliated Past Master? Just this: an affiliated Past Master is a member of our lodge who has served as Master of some other lodge. OUR lodge consists of four lodges - Ionic, Elliot Bay, Roosevelt and St. John's. By definition, Past Masters who have served each of these four lodges are not affiliated PM's.

PROSPECT PARTY - BRING A FRIEND

At a recent meeting of the officers of the lodge, it was agreed that "action" needed to replace "words" to attract men to Masonry and to St. John's. Fun outings will be scheduled monthly this next year to introduce non-masons who might, hopefully, be our future brothers. These "nights out" (or days out) will be within the local area and will be conducive to conversation and having a good time. We plan to have fun and to throw in a little chatter about Freemasonry at the same time.

We are, as the Grand Master pointed out at the last Stated Communication, at a crossroads. We can either work together for a strong future for our Lodge or we can plan on it not being there for future generations.

For starters, the following suggestions have been made: 1) play pool and have a bite to eat, 2) go bowling and have pizza and beer, 3) go to a comedy club, 4) go to a jazz club or 5) something else that appeals to you!

The first of these outings will be tentatively the Saturday afternoon or evening of January 15. Some outings in the future will also include wives and/or children. The important thing will be for each brother to invite at least one "prospect" to share the experience.

Christmas: The Best Gifts

In case you're still a few gifts short of your holiday giving list, here are some timeless ideas that won't cost you anything (except, perhaps, a bit of pride):
· Patch up a quarrel.
· Find a forgotten friend.
· Write an overdue love note.
· Keep a promise.
· Let go of a grudge.
· Lessen your demands on others.
· Apologize to someone.
· Point out the one thing you appreciate most about someone you work with or live near.

SECRETS OF THE CHAIR CEREMONY TO WELCOME NEW MASTER

Past Masters will welcome Master-elect Joseph Lund in Secrets of the Chair ceremony on Saturday, December 4. Lunch will be at 11am at the Thirteen Coins restaurant, followed by the "Secrets" ceremony at the Scottish Rite. The ceremony is for Past Masters and affiliated Past Masters of St. John's only. Please call the secretary with your reservation at 206 623-0261 no later than Wednesday, December 1.

NEEDY FAMILIES BENEFIT FROM MASONS' HELP; MORE HELP NEEDED

We will again provide food and clothing for families at Thanksgiving, and also distribute food, clothing and toys for the children at Christmas. We look forward to this annual opportunity to provide dignity, care and compassion to those families struggling to meet the bare necessities. Brethren of the Lodge get to know the families and find out how we best can help, then purchase and distribute the gifts. Joy and gratitude by the families are matched by the high satisfaction among our Brothers. Contact WBro. Joseph Lund for participation in the Christmas side of this project.
