Paul Ernest Erzen 5/13/23 - 12/17/03

Bro. Paul E. Erzen was born May 13, 1923, in Centralia, Washington to Czechoslovakian parents. He grew up in Centralia, graduating with a BA degree from the University of Washington and a Naval Reserve Commission in 1948.

He married his wife Peggy, and began work in Seattle as a sales rep for Texaco, Inc. Paul was called to active duty to serve in the Korean War, and retired as an Ensign. He later returned to the Navy as a lieutenant until June, 1960, when he transferred to the United States Air Force and served as a Captain. He received his MBA in 1962 at the University of Denver, receiving his MS degree in 1964, and a PHD in 1969 in logistics at Michigan State University. He retired as a Lt. Col. in 1971. Paul taught at U.S. International University in San Diego, at San Bernardino State University, and at San Diego State until his retirement in 1987.

Bro. Erzen was initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason into Roosevelt Lodge No. 229, February 12, 1959, passed to a Fellowcraft, March 12, 1959, and raised a Master Mason, April 9 1959. He was a Mason for 44 years.

Bro. Erzen died of leukemia, December 17, 2003. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Peggy, one brother, and two children, Charles (Skip) and Diane. Bro. Doug Crosby of St. John's Lodge No. 9 is married to a cousin of our late brother.

John Clarence Margraf - 1/29/06 - 12/26/03


Bro. John Clarence Margraf was born in Abbotsford, WI on January 29, 1906, the son of John and Clara Margraf. He grew up in the Wallingford area of Seattle. He was a bank teller when he petitioned St. John's Lodge No. 9. Bro. Margraf and his wife Frances raised a son, who they also named John.

Bro. Margraf, who answered to "Clare," divided his career between financial banking and the grocery store trade. He and Frances worked together operating the grocery, and established stores on Stoneway in Seattle, and in Santa Barbara, CA.

Bro. Margraf was initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason on May 7, 1936, passed to a Fellowcraft, June 13, 1936, and raised a Master Mason, June 27, 1936. His father, John George Margraf, was also a member of St. John's and signed his son's petition for the degrees. In 1986 he was presented his 50-year pin., and last year was presented his 65 year pin by WBro. Jeff Lane. He was a Mason for 67 years.

Our brother's final years were spent at the Hearthside Care Center of Issaquah.

Bro. Margraf was preceded in death by his wife Frances in 1989. He later found companionship with an old friend and her family, who brightened his life and offered much support and comfort as his health and eyesight began to fail.

John passed away peacefully December 26, 2003, at the Hearthside Care Center, leaving a son John and two grandchildren, Melissa and Kurt. A Masonic Funeral Service was held at Evergreen Washelli Cemetery, December 30, 2003.

Harry (Capt.) Schwartz - 7/31/07 - 1/13/04


Harry (Capt.) Schwartz was a native of Seattle and a graduate of Broadway High School. He wanted to make a career of law, but decided to carry on in his father's business, the Alaska Junk Co., which began in 1888 in Seattle. He was Chairman of Pacific Coast Division of Waste Management.

WBro. Schwartz was a very philanthropic man who cared greatly about his community. He gave generously to City of Hope, Technion University (Haifa, Israel), Seattle University, Variety Club, Jewish Federation, Seattle Foundation, Jewish Community Center, Children's Hospital, Kline Galland Home, and Jewish Family Service.

"Cap's" love was always boating. He belonged to the Seattle Yacht Club, the Rainier Yacht Club, and the U.S. Coast Guard. He was Commander of the Seattle Power Squadron. WBro. Schwartz was also a past President of Herzl Ner Tamid Congregation, a member of Bikur Cholim Synagogue and past board member of Jewish Federation and a member of Seattle Chamber of Commerce, and Temple De Hirsch Sinai.

As a young student at Seattle University, Harry was initiated into Ionic Lodge No. 90, October 24, 1928. He was passed to a Fellowcraft, November 14, 1928, and raised a Master Mason, November 28, 1928. His petition for the degrees was sponsored by WBros. Charles Schwartz and Frederick Hill, who served as Masters of Ionic in 1911 and 1910. At 28, WBro. Harry Schwartz was one of the youngest Masters to serve Ionic Lodge in 1936. He was a Mason for 75 years until his death, January 13, 2004.

He was predeceased by his fist wife Toto Schwartz and his second wife Marcy Backer Schwartz and daughter Patricia Stair Hadley. He is survived by his daughter Babette (Babs) Fisher (Edward), 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Remembrances may be made to City of Hope

Claude William Hobson - 1/5/18 - 2/11/04


Claude William Hobson was born in Seattle, Washington, January 5, 1918. He married Clamara Skow on June 1, 1940, in Bremerton. The Hobsons raised three daughters. Bro. Hobson worked as a custodial engineer for the Seattle School District until his retirement in 1981.

Bro. Hobson was initiated into St. John's Lodge as an Entered Apprentice Mason, December 11, 1943, passed to a Fellowcraft, January 22, 1944, and raised a Master Mason, February 26, 1944. His father-in-law, Martin A. Skow, had joined this lodge in 1934. Bro. Hobson was a Mason for 60 years.

Our brother suffered from diabetes and Parkinson's disease in his later years, and had been under assisted living care in Bremerton since 2000. He died February 11, 2004 of pneumonia. His body has been donated to the University of Washington Department of Medicine for research. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Clamara; three daughters, Gail Martini-Peterson, Joan Hurley, and Irene Zech; seven grand children and 13 great grand children.

Albert F. Simpson - 6/12/18 - 3/30/04


Albert F. Simpson was born June 12, 1918 in Seneca, Kansas.

He died March 30, 2004 in SeaTac, Washington at the age of 85 years. Bro. Simpson served in the U.S. Navy during WWIIHe was a sales representative for Inland Petroleum Transportation when he joined St. John's Lodge No. 9. He was President of Inland Transportation at his retirement.

Bro. Simpson was initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason, May 25, 1957. He was passed to a Fellowcraft, June 29, 1957, and raised a Master Mason July 27, 1957. He received his 40 year pin in 1997. He was a Mason for nearly 47 years.

Bro. Simpson was the beloved father of Annette Erickson. He also is survived by his best friend and beloved companion Faye Brow, and her four children Becky (Leon) Brunette, Jack Brow, Nunie (Mike) Ley, and Doug (Lori) Brow. His final years were spent in hospice in a private care home.

A Masonic Funeral Service for Bro. Simpson was held Saturday, April 3, 2004 at Bonney-Watson Washington Memorial, at SeaTac. The family requests Memorials be made to St. Jude Memphis, TN., Children's Hospital Seattle, or charity of choice.

Robert F. "Bob" Rogers - 1/14/26 - 4/7/04


Bro. Robert F. "Bob" Rogers was born January 14, 1926, in Seattle, Washington. Bob, his brother and four sisters were raised in Seattle by his parents, Robert and Francis Rogers. Following graduation from Queen Anne High School, Bob joined the United States Navy where he served with distinction as a naval pilot during WWII. He pursued a career in the construction industry.

Bro. Rogers loved to tell stories of his flying, building roads, dams, and other heavy construction along with his many world travels. He was a big man with a big heart.

Bro. Rogers asked his close friend WBro. Warren Wold to sponsor his entrance into Freemasonry. He was initiated into Ionic Lodge No. 90 as an Entered Apprentice Mason on September 18, 1974, passed to a Fellowcraft, February 5, 1975, and raised a Master Mason, February 26, 1975. He served as Marshall for Ionic Lodge from 1991 to 1993. He was a Life Member of the fraternity and became a part of St. John's Lodge No. 9 when Ionic and St. John's consolidated as one lodge in 1993. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and the Nile Shrine.

Because of his construction trade, Bob traveled the world over and usually lived with friends when in Seattle. Upon his retirement, Bro. Rogers settled in Lake Stevens. Eventually his health became an issue as he suffered with complications of diabetes. This kept him from pursuing many of the enjoyments of life. He moved back to Seattle to be closer to medical services.

Bro. Rogers died tragically April 7, at Harborview Hospital as a result of a car accident on March 29th, 2004, from which he never regained consciousness, leaving behind many friends and Masonic Brothers.

Bob was buried with military honors at Washington Memorial Park, Sea Tac, WA. on Tuesday, April 13, 2004. A Masonic Memorial Service was conducted on Saturday, April 17th, at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center, Seattle, WA. Remembrances may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland, OR.

Elmer Roy Burt - 5/14/19 - 6/9/04


Elmer Roy Burt was born May 14, 1919 in Seattle, WA. As a youth, WBro. Burt served as Master Councilor of Oregon Chapter, Order of DeMolay, in Portland. Elmer moved to West Seattle in 1950 with a very young family and a huge do-it-yourself home improvement project. He took great pleasure in raising three daughters and remodeling his home over the next 25 years. Elmer worked as an appliance repairman for Seattle City Light for 33 years.

He retired in 1981 to enjoy travel and his grandchildren. He traveled to almost every continent of the world. Elmer loved his family, treasured his friends, never met a stranger, and kept his wonderful sense of humor to the very last day. WBro. Burt was initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason into Roosevelt Lodge No. 229, November 30, 1944, passed to a Fellowcraft, January 11, 1945, and raised a Master Mason, February 15, 1945. Elmer served two terms as Master of Theodore Roosevelt Lodge (1971, 1996), was Patron of Crown Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, was a Royal Arch Mason, and Past Associate Guardian of Bethel No. 9, Job's Daughters. In recent years he was a member of Alki Lodge No. 152 and had also enjoyed membership in the Golden West Camera Club. He was a Mason for 59 years.

WBro. Burt passed away June 9, 2004, in Seattle. Preceded in death by first wife Gerry Burt in 1988, Elmer is survived by his wife Inez Burt, his daughters and sons-in-law, Wendy and Robert Henderson, Judy and David Estroff and Vicky and Dave Smith, and his five grandchildren Jennifer and Benjamin Estroff, Darren and Emily Smith, and Douglas Henderson. A Celebration of his Life was held Wednesday, June 23rd at 4 p.m. at Alki Congregational United Church of Christ in West Seattle. Memorial contributions may be made to the Providence Mount St. Vincent Foundation, 4831 35th Ave. S.W., Seattle, 98126, Group Health Foundation, 1600 E. Robert D. McBride - 12/14/29 - 6/12/04


WBro. Robert D. McBride was born December 14, 1929 in Everett, Washington to Clarence (Eb) and Evelyn (Billie) McBride. He married Barbara McBride in 1952. WBro. McBride served the United States Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War.

He retired with 42 years service from the Seattle Times, having been a member and past President of Web Pressman Local 26. He was a member of Calvary Chapel of Bothell. He was also a member and pub chair at the Pacific Northwest Scottish Highland Games for many years and served many a piper a wee dram! He loved to play golf. Our brother was known for his strong will and determination, his sense of fairness and his generous nature. Robert was initiated a Mason into Ionic Lodge No. 90 on January 10, 1980, passed to a Fellowcraft, February 23, 1980, and raised a Master Mason, April 16, 1980. He served as Master of Ionic Lodge in 1985. He also was a member of Scottish Rite and the Nile Shrine.

His strong spirit no longer able to sustain his weakening body from the ravages of cancer, our WBro. died June 12, 2004, in Kirkland, Washington at the age of 74.

WBro. McBride is survived by his wife Barbara. He was also a loving father to Sharon Ritelis (Reinis), John McBride (April), Gregg McBride (Dianna), Stephen McBride (Gina), and Matthew McBride. He was preceded in death by son Christopher McBride. He was the adoring grandfather to Brittney, Meagan, Charlie, Jeremy and Christina.

Memorial Services were at 4 p.m. on Monday, June 21, 2004 at Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church, 111 N.E. 80th, Seattle, Washington. In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances made to Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center, Shriners Hospitals for Children or charity of your choice.

Harry Clayton Luce - 6/26/21 - 7/10/04


Harry Clayton Luce was born June 16, 1921 in Hoquiam, Washington, the son of Percy Owen Luce and Lillian (England) Luce. He died July 10, 2004 in Florence, Arizona at the age of 83 years. Bro. Luce served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was an elevator sales and repair man when he joined St. John's Lodge No. 9. Bro. Luce and his wife Mary raised three children.

Bro. Luce was initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason, October 31, 1959. He was passed to a Fellowcraft, November 28, 1959, and raised a Master Mason January 16, 1960. Bro. Luce was a snow bird between Seattle and Florence, where he occasionally attended lodge. He received his 40 year pin in 2000. He was a Mason for 44 years.

Bro. Luce is survived by his wife Mary and three children, Connie Buren, Robert (Bob) Luce and Vickie Luce. Connie is the wife of WBro. Wayne Buren, Past Master of Queen Anne Lodge No. 242. He will be interred at Tahoma National Cemetery, where services will be held this coming Friday.

George Robert Maynard - 4/7/22 - 7/9/04


George Robert Maynard was born April 7, 1922, in Lake Nebagamon, Wisconsin. Bro. Maynard was a retired mechanic when he joined St. John's Lodge No. 9. Bro. Maynard and his wife Eleanor raised three children. A veteran of World War II, and long-time resident of the Seattle area, George was widely known as an expert mechanic, a lover of animals and a valued friend.

Bro. Maynard was initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason, August 25, 1990. He was passed to a Fellowcraft, October 27, 1990, and raised a Master Mason November 17, 1990. He was a member of the Eastern Star and the Nile Shrine.

Mrs. Eleanor Maynard preceded her husband in death. Bro. Maynard passed away peacefully on July 9, 2004. He was 82, years old. He is survived by his three children, Marcy Neves, Gretchen Maynard, and George Maynard, Jr.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. No services will be held at his request. Dale Homer Toombs - 4/13/31 - 9/12/04


Dale H. Toombs was born April 13, 1931 in Spokane, WA. He died September 12, 2004 in Mesa, AZ at the age of 73 years. Bro. Toombs was a bank officer when he joined St. John's Lodge No. 9. He worked in Seattle for many years as a building contractor before his retirement.

Bro. Toombs was initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason, October 26, 1968. He was passed to a Fellowcraft, November 20, 1968, and raised a Master Mason January 25, 1969. He was a Mason for nearly 36 years.

Bro. Toombs retired to Arizona, where he lived for several years. He is survived by his best friend and beloved wife, Frances, Uncle Paul and a host of others.

Services were held for Bro. Toombs October 9, 2004 at Denny Park Lutheran Church in Seattle. The family requests memorials be made to the American Diabetes Association.

William Walter Goodman - 5/19/16 - 10/17/04


Bro. William W. Goodman passed away on October 17, 2004 at the age of 88 in the loving care of his family. He was born in Seattle, WA on May 19, 1916. Bro. Goodman graduated from Ballard High School, was an Eagle Scout, and served in the Washington National Guard. He served as a Lieutenant in the Seattle Fire Department for 24 years. He also was the Fire Officer for the Seattle World's Fair and Fire Inspector for the University of Washington.

Bro. Goodman was initiated into Ionic Lodge No. 90, July 23, 1947. He was passed to a Fellowcraft October 1, 1947, and raised a Master Mason, November 5, 1947. He was made a life member of Ionic Lodge in 1977. He became a plural member of Doric Lodge No. 92 on February 2, 1993. Bro. Goodman was presented with his 50 year pin by St. John's Lodge, December 14, 1997, and received a 55 year pin from Doric Lodge, November of 2003.

Our brother was an avid fisherman throughout his life and enjoyed carpentry and gardening. His wife of 68 years, Beverly, his daughters Kathy Prather and Sandra Hinton, son William G. Goodman, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren survive him. Services will be held at the Shoreline Community College, Tuesday, October 26, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Medic One Foundation.

Herbert Wayne Lane - 9/10/14 - 2/12/04


Herbert Wayne Lane was born September 10, 1914 in Atlanta, GA. He died February 12, 2004 in Sequim, WA at the age of 89 years. Bro. Lane was a welder by trade when he joined Ionic Lodge No. 90.
Bro. Lane was initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason, December 12, 1945. He was passed to a Fellowcraft, January 16, 1946, and raised a Master Mason February 20, 1946. He was a Mason for 58 years.
Bro. Lane retired to Sequim, where he lived for several years. He is survived by his beloved wife Doris and daughter Melinda, who live in Edmonds.

Douglas Phillip Anderson - 1/27/18 - 12/2/04


Douglas Phillip Anderson was born Jan. 27, 1918 in Seattle, WA, to Axel and Signe Anderson. The youngest of three brothers, Bro. Anderson attended Broadway High School where he met his future wife Helen. The couple married Aug. 23, 1941 and raised two children, daughter Diane and son Richard. He was proud to serve his country in WWII as a Merchant Marine.

Bro. Anderson worked for Puget Power and then for the City of Seattle as a steam engineer for the Shuffleton, Georgetown & Lake Union steam plants until his retirement. He and his wife enjoyed traveling, and went to Sweden and cruised the tropics. He enjoyed golf and was an active Mason and member of the Elks. Bro. Anderson was initiated into St. John's as an Entered Apprentice September 23, 1950, was passed a Fellowcraft, March 10, 1951, and raised a Master Mason, March 31, 1951. He was a member of the Craft for 53 years, and received his 50 year pin July, 2001.

Bro. Anderson passed away December 2, 2004, preceded in death by his wife Helen of 52 years in January 1993, and his daughter Diane in Jan 1994. He is survived by his son Richard, brother Erik, 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. Masonic services were held Friday, December 10, at Wiggen & Sons Funeral Home in Ballard.

Landon Ray Brown - 7/4/20 - 12/1/04


Landon Ray Brown was born July 4, 1920, in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in Arkansas and attended the University of Arkansas before moving to Seattle to assist in the war effort as an aircraft engineer for Boeing. He went on to graduate from the University of Washington with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Bro. Landon had a great desire to learn and eventually passed his Professional Engineers License, acquired an MBA, and graduated from Western States Law School after age 55. In his retirement, he became a Ham radio operator and served as president of the local Ham club in Hemet, WA.

Bro. Brown was initiated into St. John's Lodge No. 9 as an Entered Apprentice, January 10, 1948, passed to a Fellowcraft, February 14, 1948, and raised a Master Mason, March 27, 1948. His father-in-law was also a member of this lodge. Bro. Attwood received his 50 year pin in 1998. He was proud to be a Mason for 56 years. His many other interests included motor homing and rock crawling in his Jeep Wrangler. If he and his wife Virginia, of 61 years, weren't at home, they were in Moab, UT exploring and rock crawling. Bro. Landon and his wife were members of the Hemet Jeep Club and the Hemet Elks Lodge. They could be found on the golf course, out dancing or playing bridge and were always together.

Bro. Attwood spent the majority of his professional career with Bechtel Engineering, building nuclear power plants throughout the world. His wife, as well as his five children, Kent, Roger, Connie (Chensky), Tim, Jeanne (Thomas), along with 14 grandchildren, survive Bro. Attwood, who surrendered to the ravages of lung cancer.

Carl H. Bauer - 7/24/06 - 11/7/04


Carl H. Bauer was born July 24, 1906, in Butte, Montana. He was a baker by trade when he joined the fraternity.

Bro. Bauer was initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason into Summit Valley Lodge No. 123 of Butte, MT, February 27, 1945. He was passed to a Fellowcraft, March 8, 1945, and raised a Master Mason April 26, 1945. He affiliated into St. John's Lodge No. 9 on March 16, 1978. A member of the Nile Shrine, Bro. Bauer was a Mason for 59 years.

He is survived by his son Clare Bauer. A memorial service for Bro. Bauer was conducted by the Nile Shrine.

William T. Attwood - 11/19/09 - 6/4/04


William T. Attwood was born November 19, 1909, in Newcastle, WA, to Charles and Nellie Attwood, new immigrants from England. Bro. Attwood graduated from Cleveland High School where he met his wife Kathryn Byers. They wed and moved into the Byers home in the South Park neighborhood of Seattle, where they lived all their married life. Bro. Attwood continued to live in the family home until his health forced him to move to Queen Anne Manor at the age of 90.

Bro. Attwood was initiated into Southgate Lodge No. 247 as an Entered Apprentice Mason, January 25, 1952. He was passed to a Fellowcraft, April 28, 1952, and raised a Master Mason, June 20, 1952. He affiliated with St. John's Lodge No. 9, June 28, 1969. He was a Knights Templar in the Royal Arch, and was a brother of the Craft for 52 years.

Bro. Attwood served as an engineer for Boeing until his retirement just short of 40 years.

Bro. Attwood was preceded in death by his loving wife Kathryn. He is survived by a daughter, Molliann (Johnson).
