TOP 10 WAYS TO ASK A FRIEND TO BE A BROTHER WITHOUT ASKING
from Frank S. Land Lodge No. 313 Trestleboard

1. Take the Initiative! Potential members are not going to beat down your door for a petition to join. You've got to show them why they should want to join.

2. Proudly tell the world around you that you are a Mason. Especially make sure you tell your friends that you would like to see join us as a brother. By your example, show how Masonry has made you a better man and friend.

3. Always carry a blank Membership Petition in your wallet. Never leave home without one. Put it where you used to carry your high school necessities (such as your ASB and School Events Cards)

4. Tell your friends about the activities of the Lodge. For the friend who is "with wife and/or family," tell him about the activities we enjoy with our spouses, significant others and families. For the bachelor friend, stress the friendship and fun, 'testosterone oriented activities we enjoy. Tell your friend, that while we are serious about our work, we also work seriously on our Fun, Fellowship and Family Activities. Don't forget to tell your friend about the good works we also do in our communities.

5. Tell your friends about the other members of the lodge and their roles in our communities. Hopefully he will know others in the Lodge.

6. Invite your friends to attend Lodge activities. Don't forget family activities. Impress one spouse, get the other as a brother. Offer rides to and from the activities. That way you can be certain he will attend.

7. After activities, follow-up to make sure your friend enjoyed the activity and the fellowship with the brothers:

8. Tell your friend that you think he would make a good Mason and that you would like to see him as a member of our Lodge. Answer any questions he may have about Masonry. In the conversation casually tell your friend that while you can't ask him to join, but he can ask you for a petition; Tell your friend that To Be One, He has to Ask One.

9. When your friend asks for the Petition, help him fill it out. Don't leave his side without his signed Petition. If he tells you he needs to think about it or talk to his family, tell him you understand. Let him know you will check back with him in a couple of days if you don't hear from him. If you don't hear from him within five (5) days, don't wait any longer, call him and ask him for the Petition. Its best to get Petition and fees at one time, but be prepared to get the petition first and the money later.

10. If you work with any of the Masonic Youth Groups, don't forget the members (DeMolay) or their fathers, male family members, and interested male adult workers (DeMolay, Rainbow, Job's Daughters). They already know something about Masonry and because of their involvement, they're ready to take the next step.

The common denominator in each of these ten steps is YOU! A potential Mason is just that - a potential Mason - unless YOU, the Mason, give him the reasons why he should want to be a Mason and then show him the way to ask and join Our Lodge. Masonry is not a secret! We should not be a secret to our friends and those around us. For those Masons who believe Masonry is a Secret organization, then their Masonic "sign" is the "closed tight lips," and their Masonic Penalty is the "permanently dark Lodge." So, in 2005, let's widen our circle of brothers with our friends

OFFICIAL VISIT OF THE DISTRICT DEPUTY FEATURED AT FEBRUARY STATED

Worshipful Master Joseph Lund looks forward to greeting all our brothers at our meeting Wednesday, February 5. Also, we will be receiving VWBro. Mike Davis on his official visit to the lodge representing our Grand Master, MWBro. Sat Tashiro. VWBro. Davis will bring greetings and a message. It is the province of the Deputy of the Grand Master to visit every lodge in his district at least once each year. He carries with him a copy of the Standard Work, i.e. the proper ritual of our jurisdiction. This allows a brother to confirm or correct his own use of our beloved ritual. He reports on the condition of the lodge to the Grand Master following each visit. He may examine the books and records of each lodge. And, of course, he brings news from the Grand Master and a knowledge of what is happening in our District (5) and the Grand Jurisdiction of Washington.

Also featured for our entertainment prior to the meeting will be performing artists from the Seattle Youth Symphony. Bring a friend to enjoy this program!

The Worshipful Master encourages every Mason to come to Lodge February 5. If you need a ride, call the Secretary at 206 623-0261. Bring a friend!

FURTHER LIGHT IN MASONRY

Do you have an interesting Masonic message to share at one of our meetings? Bro. Adam Mackler is searching for brothers who can add "further light in Masonry." We're hoping to present 5 minutes or so of personal and motivational messages at most of our meetings. If you have something to share, let us know. Or if you know someone, steer him Bro. Adam's direction.

I have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them.

The latest word from the Scottish Rite:

The Seattle Scottish Rite is still looking for property to build on or to remodel. We have investigated over 30 properties this past year however; none met our criteria for one reason or another.

We currently have 3 sites under consideration and are looking for more. This is not an easy task.

Rest assured that when we find the right place you will be notified and given the opportunity to move in with us.

We don't plan on moving from here until the spring of 2007. The latest we can stay is October 2007. We need to get

our money from the sale of this building before we can build or remodel.

Sincerely,
s/Carl Alexander
General Secretary

TSUNAMI RESPONSE

On December 26, a catastrophic 9 magnitude earthquake - the largest earthquake in over 40 years - destroyed much of Southeast Asia, spawning tsunamis that have severely flooded coastal areas. Estimates place the death toll over 150,000 people, with millions displaced and homeless as a result of the disaster.

At the January stated meeting, members of the lodge voted to provide $10,000 to Mercy Corps for relief of the tsunami victims.

Among the charities who are actively helping in that region is Mercy Corps, out of Portland, OR. Mercy Corps staff members are on the ground in Indonesia and headed to other affected areas to meet the critical needs of children and families. While the lodge does not receive a tax benefit for donations, members of the lodge would be eligible if they make direct contributions to a recognized 501(c)(3) non profit organization. Mercy Corps is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization. Donations to Mercy Corps are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.

Let's Go Bowling!!!
