" And so shall we too, build our spiritual house..."

I have had the delightful pleasure, these past two months, to work on a Brother's house in its construction. The quality and detail is very "Old World" construction, meticulous in detail. I did small utility jobs, working around painters, tilers, cabinetry, mill working, and deck and fencing. As I worked alongside these different craftsman, I saw that most of them were masters of their craft. Their attention and zeal to their craft was moving to me. Then I started to see others, who did not have the same zeal as did the masters. Their work suffered and many times had to be
taken apart and rebuilt. When the foreman would leave they would turn to the other craftsman and complain, make excuses, and enlist sympathy for their situation. All I could offer them was to do their best and put their heart into it.

Lies and deceit began to follow, when it hit me. When we are building our spiritual house, we are often plagued and inundated with every manner of subversion. We do our best not to falter, but we do; we are human. We need to remember that though we are not perfect, we can still be our best and live our life as a Mason. If we put forth the effort, there is nothing that we cannot do. No road we cannot travel. No building that we cannot erect, especially our spiritual house, where we live in peace and harmony.

MASONIC PARK CAMPOUT July 8-9-10

Several brothers from St. John's and their families will spend a weekend of fun at the Masonic Park July 8-9-10. The kids will enjoy the swings and slides and open lawns and the adults will have a good time enjoying the outdoors. There will be a shared potluck on Saturday evening. Tents and RV spaces are available, or just take advantage of covered shelter to accommodate sleeping bags and air mattresses. An evening campfire will put the finishing touches to a full day of brotherly and family sharing.

The Granite Falls Masonic Park is located 4.5 miles east of the city of Granite Falls, in Snohomish County, on the "mountain loop" highway. Directions and other info can be found at the Masonic Park website. We will gather at Peterson Hall by the fish ponds.

The fee is $6 a head per night to camp, children under 12 are free; or $5 per person to picnic for a day. The Lodge will pick up these fees for the first 30 to arrive and register.

SUMMER MEETING FEATURES HERB'S NIGHT
Invitation to our ladies

2nd Wednesday in July; Ladies welcome!

It seems to work so well, we're going to do it again! Or something like it. To acknowledge our seventh year returning to a 12-month Lodge, we are issuing a special invitation to join us at our July 13 meeting. This summer meeting will focus on our "snow bird" brethren, and is billed as "Herb's Night."

A special evening of entertainment and instruction will be held, beginning with dinner at 6pm, followed by the 7:30 business meeting. Much of the routine of the meeting will be eliminated, except for the necessary paying the bills. Throughout the evening, we will be honoring our brothers who have had little opportunity to join us in recent years.

That is why we are extending a special invitation to those who don't get out to Lodge more than once or twice a year. And to make it even a little more special, bring the ladies!

"Herb's Night" was created to honor our members we seldom have the opportunity to meet, and was named after one of our "snow birds" who lived nine months of the year in Hawaii and three months in the Seattle area. For that reason, we encourage all our brothers to dress in Hawaiian shirts and the ladies in muumuu's or other casual attire.

The Greg Fulton Trio will play soft jazz throughout dinner and continue to perform for the ladies while the gentlemen conduct a brief business session. The ladies will then join the men as we pay tribute to our departed brethren and honor some brothers who have achieved special milestones in the fraternity.

The ladies are invited to join us for dinner and to share in the evening's activities.

We particularly want our snow birds and infrequent attendees to be a part of this. Please call the secretary, VWBro. Jim Russell, at (206) 623-0261 if you can join us, so that we may know how many to expect for dinner. Transportation will be arranged for those who may need it.
Aloha!

Resolution to Authorize Expenses

WBro. Jeff Lane has surveyed the premises available at Greenwood Masonic Center and has provided an estimate of the costs associated with preparing storage for our archives and for our paraphernalia. It is hoped that some monies will be available to present a gift to the Center as part of the moving in. The following resolution will be acted upon at our July Stated Communication:

  • Whereas St. John's Lodge No. 9 will be making a new home at Greenwood Masonic Center, and
  • Whereas it becomes necessary to prepare suitable storage for the archives, paraphernalia and other properties of the lodge,
  • Therefore be it resolved that a sum not to exceed $20,000 be authorized for the construction of storage facilities and improvements as a gift to Greenwood Masonic Center.

We Are Moving - Are You?

Your lodge is moving effective in September, so please remember to take a little time to re-adjust your sights when heading for our stated communication. Our new address is 7910 Greenwood Ave. N. That's just a few blocks south of the main intersection of N. 85th and Greenwood N., on the east side of the street.

We're moving - how about you? Please let us know your new address and telephone anytime you make that big move to a new lifestyle or residence. It costs us 70c each time the post office must notify us of the change. For those who pay dues, we keep only $1, the rest goes to Grand Lodge. For those who no longer pay dues, well… you do the math!

FAMILY PICNIC AT NILE AUGUST 14

Mark your calendars, invite your friends and especially those who might be good candidates for Masonry and come to our annual St. John's Lodge No. 9 Family Picnic, Sunday, August 14. As last year, our picnic will be held at the Nile Temple picnic grounds, area "B." The Lodge will furnish the steaks, chicken, hot dogs and buns. You need only to bring a choice of one of the following: hot or cold vegetable, salad, dessert. And, oh, yeah, your appetite! See next issue of the Trestleboard for further details.

CELESTIAL LODGE CALLS BROTHERS HOME
We mourn the loss of these Brothers who have passed to the Celestial Lodge in 2005:

Bro. Edward (Col.) Anderson, Bro. Francis (Frank) Bean, WBro. J. David Hampton, VWBro. Ernest (Sam) Harding, VWBro. Richard Oslund, WBro. George Price, and Bro. Ed Wagner

Thy days of toil on earth, my Brothers, are over. You have entered upon a greater field of labor and of love.

ANNUAL COMMUNICATION OF GRAND LODGE
Fifteen members of St. John's attended the recent Grand Lodge meeting in Tacoma. MWBro. Al Jorgensen was elevated as Grand Master; RW Doug Tucker (Spokane) was elected to serve as JGW.

Delegates to the annual communication of Grand Lodge addressed amendments to the Masonic Code last month in Wenatchee. Changed were the titles of Grand Lodge
Organist and Lodge Organist to "Musician." The "umpteenth" attempt to make a proficient Master Mason a voting member of GL was defeated. (The underlying opposition comes from the smaller lodges fearing a block of votes from the larger lodges.) 2005-13 to allow the GL General Fund to receive 1% of the value of the Masonic Home Endowment Fund annually was withdrawn, as was 2005-15 which would have assessed lodges $18 per member for 3 years. ($$ "magically" appeared following a final audit.)

Appointments to the Grand Lodge team for 2005-2006 which were announced in last month's Trestleboard should have included VWBro. Ashley Brinkley as Senior Grand Deacon. VWBro. Brinkley has filed to run for Junior Grand Warden at next year's communication in Ocean Shores. That brings to four the number of collared GL officers who are members of St. John's, with five others members of Grand Lodge committees

TOUR UNDERGROUND SEATTLE
Thirty-six members of the St. John's family enjoyed a tour through Underground Seattle on Wednesday, June 15. The tour began at Doc Maynard's Public House, a restored 1890s saloon, and included a walk through historic Pioneer Square to three different sections of underground.

During the tour, we were introduced to a picture of Seattle in 1872, which included the first St. John's Masonic Temple. The last building (2 story with two windows on the top floor) just separated by the street on the right hand side of the main business street and the most central point of the photo is the original St. John's Lodge No. 9 building.
