November 2005
From the East

It is hard to believe that the year is quickly coming to an end. At first I wonder where all the time has gone, but then I look back and see the wonderful changes that have come to pass at St. John's.

This Spring we were hit with the sudden news that we had less than a year to relocate to a new meeting place. Members of our lodge sprung into action, researching our options. Diligent brothers on the Long Range Planning Committee reviewed the options of purchasing or leasing property or moving to an existing lodge. Their recommendation and a unanimous vote of the lodge selected Greenwood Masonic Center as our new home. With the help of many brethren, especially WBros. Hans Wehl and Jeff Lane, we made a
smooth and seamless move from the Scottish Rite Masonic Center to Greenwood. I have been most pleased at how well the move went - with a new sense of fellowship that is being rekindled, and shared fellowship with the brethren of Greenwood Lodge.

This Spring also saw St. John's sponsor a new lodge, Esoterika Lodge, U.D. - Esoterika held it's first Stated Meeting on October 25 at Greenwood. Dinner and meeting were well attended by Grand Master MWBro. Alvin Jorgensen, Senior Grand Warden RW Wayne Smith, Grand Secretary RW David Owen, several district deputies, and a whole table full of Past Grand Masters. Dinner was prepared by Bros. William Isabelle and Robert Dinwiddie - smoked Alaska salmon caught by the chefs. There was a genuine feeling of fellowship that offers new hope for the future of our fraternity. But more importantly, I saw clearly what it is that we as Masons have to remember - fellowship.

Fellowship is what brings the newly made Mason back to his lodge again and again. Fellowship is what makes a brother volunteer to serve as an officer, and one day even to become Master of his lodge. Fellowship is what makes the 50-year Mason make sure that he has a way to get to lodge every month. Fellowship is what makes a sojourning brother seek out a lodge of complete strangers, and choose to petition them to become a member. Fellowship is the most important thing keeping our fraternity alive. Without it, why would we be here? Without it, why would we take time out of our lives, away from our families? Without it, why would we care about our distressed worthy brethren, their widows and orphans. Fellowship was what I first saw when I was invited to dinner at St. John's, and it is what keeps me coming back every month.

It has been a pleasure and honor to serve as Worshipful Master to the brethren of St. John's Lodge No. 9. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting me and your lodge.

Joseph Lund, WM

We now meet at Greenwood Masonic Center - 7910 Greenwood Ave. N.

WELCOME TO ST. JOHN'S
The Master welcomes all to St. John's for our Stated Meeting of November 16. Dinner begins at 6:15. Please let the Secretary know you and a guest will be in attendance so we can give the chef an accurate count!

OFFICER ELECTIONS; PAST MASTERS FETED IN NOVEMBER
Action to be taken on 2006 Budget
Our brothers won't want to miss November's Stated! New officers will be elected to serve in 2006, our Past Masters will be given a special recognition for their long and loyal service to the lodge, and the budget for 2006 will be presented for approval. What a full evening this one will be! And mixed in with all this action will be the formal recognition of a sojourner's 50 years as a Master Mason. This Stated Communication will be Wednesday, November 16. Dinner will be served at the Greenwood Masonic Center at 6:15 p.m.

Once again it is that time of year when we honor the Past Masters of St. John's Lodge No. 9. We are pleased to have these revered brothers join us as we recognize their achievements for the year they served this lodge and our consolidated lodges of Ionic No. 90, Elliott Bay No. 257, and Theodore Roosevelt No 229. What a legacy and what a history! Fifty-eight living Past Masters have served these four lodges, thirteen having served for at least two terms; two, WBros. Paul Wickward and Jack Avery, serving four different years for Roosevelt No. 229. A full house is always a happy occasion at ceremonies such as this, so brothers, please join us. As is our tradition, a select core of Past Masters led by our junior Past Master WBro. Michael Rust, will close lodge.

At that meeting we also will be electing officers and a Trustee for the next term. We anticipate that Brother Mark Campbell, our Senior Warden, will be elevated to the East. Bro. Campbell has been a member of the fraternity and this Lodge since 1996, and is a Past Master Councilor of Shoreline DeMolay. He is 35 years
old and he and his wife Katie have just recently adopted a little girl, Abby. An open installation of officers will be Saturday morning, December 10, at 10 a.m. We welcome and encourage families and guests.

Offices up for election will be the Master, Wardens, Treasurer, Secretary and one Trustee. Any member proficient as a Master Mason is eligible to be elected to one of these offices. VWBro. David Campbell (Master-1992) will be concluding his 4-year term as a Trustee and is seeking re-election. WBro. Jeff Lane (Master-2001) also is seeking election to that position. Senior Deacon Bro. Jim Wold is more than capable and available for the South.

The 2006 Budget will be presented for action. It allows for an upgrade to the sound system, $25,000 in student scholarships, and over $80,000 in additional charity support.

It is said that the 'sign and word' of a Past Master consists of poking a finger into the chest of anyone who'll listen accompanied by the words, "They didn't do it that way in my term...."

ST. JOHN'S TO ADOPT FAMILIES FOR THANKSGIVING & CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS
We will again provide food and clothing for families at Thanksgiving, and also distribute food, clothing and toys for the children at Christmas. We look forward to this annual opportunity to provide dignity, care and compassion to those families struggling to meet the bare necessities. Brethren of the Lodge get to know the families and find out how we best can help, then purchase and distribute the gifts. Joy and gratitude by the families are matched by the high satisfaction among our Brothers. Contact WBro. Ken Lane, Jr. for participation in the Thanksgiving distribution and VWBro. Charles Brockway for the Christmas side of these projects.

MWBro. Matt Hill part of Husky Mascot tradition
Our Past Master (1933) Matt Hill (Grand Master 1940) was president of the University of Washington Alumni Association in 1934 when a decision was made to find a new mascot for the then UW "Sun Dodgers." His encouragement and leadership contributed to the eventual selection of the Husky mascot. MWBro. Hill was appointed to the Washington State Supreme Court Jan. 13, 1947, and served until retirement, Dec. 31, 1969. He was Chief Justice January 1957-January 1959

2006 DUES

St. John's dues for 2006 will again be $12, and are payable by December 31 of this year. Those who have been members of the Fraternity for 40 years, are Life Members, or who have served as Master of this Lodge are not obligated to pay dues in St. John's.

LODGE OFFICERS TO BE INSTALLED SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10

The officers of St. John's Lodge invite all members and friends to join in an open installation of officers, Saturday morning, December 10, at 10am. Members of the Seattle Youth Symphony will be performing. Our Past Grand Master MWBro. Richard Mecartea will be the installing officer. Refreshments will follow.

Later that day, officers of Greenwood Lodge No. 253 will be installed, and another member of St. John's, Bro. Helmuth Svoboda, will be installed as Master of University Lodge No. 141.

Veterans Day November 11

Taps, the hauntingly beautiful Bugle call, which signals the end of day as well as the end of life for American Service men, was composed by our Masonic Brother General Daniel Butterfield of Civil War fame. It has become one of, if not the most recognized musical composition known world wide. He was a member of Metropolitan Lodge No. 273, New York City, New York.

Do you have a copy of our History Book(s)?

If you don't have both volumes of our lodge history, let the Secretary know and he will arrange to get them to you.

MAKE YOUR CHARITY REQUESTS "TODAY"

Every member of St. John's is encouraged to recommend where our charity contributions should be made. You'll find a charity request form on our web site at www.seattlemasons.org. These guidelines have been drawn:
  • We shall support causes predominantly in this local geographical area.
  • These charities or causes should have low administrative costs in proportion to their benefits.
  • There should be a proven involvement by a member or members of the lodge, either with their skill, time or money.
  • The cause should be apolitical and non-sectarian.
  • The cause should be of high moral value.
  • The cause should generally fall into supporting youth, the aged, health, or education.

QUALITY MASONIC BOOKS SOUGHT

If you have a library which includes good Masonic works, we encourage you to donate your collection to St. John's Lodge or to the Grand Lodge Library & Museum in Tacoma. Good reference materials are always a happy find for those who wish to study the Craft and its history. Our special thanks to Mrs. Loralee Price, who responded last month with a wonderful contribution from our late Past Master George Price's collection of Masonic works.
