April Stated Communication Pictures by WB Darrel Womack Report written with aid from the Stated Meeting Minutes |
 | | April 19th brought the Brethren of St. John's Lodge No. 9 together again for our monthly Stated Communication. Our Chaplain, Bro. Doug Lidz, asked for the blessing and all sat for an excellent Steak dinner at 6:15 PM. Joining us this month were three members of the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras Organisation. |
After everyone had sufficiently stuffed themselves WM Mark Campbell asked everyone to adjourn to the Lodge room for a Beethoven Cello sonata played by cellist Lavena Johanson and pianist Jesse Yukimura. They played beautifully and eveyone was entranced during the performance.
When they finished the Worshipful Master presented | | | Josef Krebs, SYSO Development Director with a check. We have been contributing to the SYSO for about fifty years and St. John's Lodge No. 9 is proud of its involvement with this youth organization.
|
 | | The guests were then excused and the Master opened on the Third Degree.
The flag was deposited in the East and the Pledge recited, Introductions were made, minutes of the last meeting were read, communications heard, bills paid, and all the other usual business of the Lodge was quickly dispensed with. |
The Secretary reported that 47 reservations have been received so far for the FABulous Family Appreciation Brunch, Sunday, May 7, again at Ivar's Salmon House. We expect to have close to 130 reservations by the time of the brunch. WBro. Tupper reported that Ivar's has just re-opened following six months of extensive remodeling.
WBro. Bill Collison reported that he and WBro. Terry Grove visited a woman who is the daughter, niece and granddaughter of three of our late lodge brothers, who has been diagnosed with cancer of the liver and is in need of a liver transplant. Her options are slim, but she is hoping for some relief by Stanford University School of Medicine. The Master has issued $500 from his Master's Charity Fund to assist in her travels and application for medical treatment at Stanford.
WBro. Hans Wehl reported that the company store has "glass magnet" window decals available which read "www.SeattleMasons.org." The committee is looking at jackets and stainless steel coffee cups, and hopes to have a catalogue of store items soon.
WBro. Ken Lane, Jr. reported that the scholarship committee has received recommendations from Ballard High School, and expects recommendations soon from Chief Sealth HS and Northwest College of Nursing.
WBro. Charlie Tupper reported that the St. John's website has added a new feature which permits members to make reservations for coming events. Also, a forum for inter-active communication has returned to the site. This was tried for a short time in the past but was not used extensively. We'll give it another try.
Youth committee chairman VWBro. David Campbell reported that he will be visiting Job's Daughters No. 77 of Bothell, Tuesday, April 25, and T. H. Little Chapter, Order of DeMolay, Wednesday, April 26. He invited any brother to join him as he will determine the financial needs of those two youth organizations.
Bro. Steven Specht reported that the King County Masonic Service Bureau will be holding a dinner meeting Friday, April 28, at the Nile Shrine. WBro. Darrel Womack, our representative to the MSB will not be able to attend the quarterly meeting and hoped that a member of the lodge will be able to attend. Dinner reservations are required.
Three petitions for plural membership and two for the Degrees of Masonry were read and one petition for plural membership was favorably balloted.
A memorial was read by the Secretary and the Officers performed the Lodge memorial service.
The District Deputy was favored with the Lodge singing?? happy birthday as he was the only April birthday present. He may recover from this honor but we aren't sure.
Seven visiting brothers from Lafayette Lodge No. 241 delivered the District No. 5 "traveling bowl" to the Worshipful Master. The holder of the bowl is required to deposit $1 for each day it is in his possession. It is an incentive to encourage the brethren to travel.
Also laying claim to the Traveling Trowel were the brothers from Lafayette and nine brothers from Esoterika Lodge U.D. As several of the Esoterika brothers were plural members from St. John's, it was agreed that the brothers from Lafayette should also claim the Trowel.
The Secretary proposed a resolution to be voted on at the next Stated Communication:
--Whereas St. John's Lodge No. 9 has two resolutions to amend the Grand Masonic Code before the delegates at this year's annual communication of Grand Lodge, and
--Whereas, there are also two candidates from our lodge who have presented themselves as candidates for Junior Grand Warden, and
--Whereas it is in the interest of this lodge to be well represented to make our case for the support of these resolutions and candidates, therefore be it resolved
--That the budget line item "Grand Lodge annual communication" expenses be increased by $1,000 to $4,500.
This resolution will be placed in the Trestleboard.
The Lodge voted to cover a limited amount of the expenses directly related to the 2006 Communication of Grand Lodge, limited to the Master, Wardens and Past Masters of this Lodge and those lodges which have consolidated with this lodge.
The Master appointed five brothers to present a review of the proposed Grand Lodge resolutions at the May Stated Meeting. The following brothers volunteered: VWBros. Mike Davis and Chuck Brockway, WBros. Joseph Lund and Bill Collison, and Bro. Nick Mitchell.
WBro. Terry Grove brought a motion which was passed that St. John's contribute funds directly to the King Solomon Lodge No. 60 scholarship program. This is in lieu of the lodge sponsoring golfers in their tournament to raise money for scholarships, it being apparent that this would provide more scholarship money. VWBro. Charles Brockway said that he would be interested in putting together a foursome to also play in the tournament. The players would do so at their own expense.
VWBro. Brockway reminded the brethren that the movie "The DaVinci Code" will be released next month, and that with the recent books and last year's movie "National Treasure" raising a public interest in Freemasonry, we need to be "duly and truly" prepared. WBro. Jim Lumsden said that Greenwood Lodge sells hot dogs during the Greenwood Classic Car Show. That lodge also participates in the Greenwood Seafair Parade (July 26) with the Masonic Float. VWBro. Jim Russell m/s/p that the lodge sponsor a "friend of the Greenwood Classic Car Show" ad. This is a listing of our name in many of the promotional materials for the show, Saturday, June 24.
WBro. Ken Lane, Jr. requested that the lodge purchase two Little League promotion banners - one each for our Minor and Major teams. These would be hung on the dugout so that people who may not know who the teams are will know the Masons are there. It was voted that St. John's purchase two promotional banners to be used during the Little League baseball games. The Secretary will prepare a letter for the Grand Master's approval.

VWBro. Brockway noted that ten years "and three days" ago our Master Mark Campbell was raised a Master Mason. WBro. Campbell's three signers of his petition were in attendance this evening - his father VWBro. David Campbell, VWBro. Brockway, and VWBro. Jim Russell.
The Senior Warden presented a pen to each Trustee of the lodge and thanked them for the many hours of their time devoted to our lodge.
The Junior Warden remarked that he valued his weekend at the recent Wardens conference and thanked the lodge for its support in providing the opportunity for leadership training.
VWBro. Mike Davis brought greetings from the Grand Master who was attending to duties in Salem, Oregon on this evening. He announced that WBro. Jim Maher of Daylight Lodge No. 232 will represent our Grand Master next year as his Deputy for District No. 5. Grand Lodge is also looking for volunteers to act as hosts for out-of town dignitaries leading to and during our annual communication in June.
VWBro. Coe Tug Morgan expressed his appreciation for the music supplied by the two members of the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra, and reminded us that two members of the Board are Masons. They are MWBro. Sat Tashiro of Lakeside and St. John's and WBro. Jim Maher of Daylight. Our own late Past Grand Master and Past Master of St. John's George Bovingdon at one time served as president of the SYSO. District No. 5 LOMA will be holding a pizza party for the orchestra at noon, May 21, prior to a 3pm concert. Workers are invited to assist and remain for the concert.
Brother David Flood remarked that the ABC Today show on TV Channel 4 has included segments on the Masons and Knights Templars yesterday, today and will do so again tomorrow morning. On this date in 1775 the Battle of Lexington is regarded as the beginning of the Revolutionary War.
WBro. Terry Grove stated that the Nile Shrine has 2,600 members, locally, and helps to support the Children's Hospital in Portland. The Shrine, like many institutions, is experiencing low membership pains. By a show of hands, it was found that there were 11-12 members of the Shrine present this evening.
WBro. Vincent DiGiulio announced that the CHIPs program is being well received in our community. On May 26, there will be a program to register kids on Fort Lewis. This is being arranged in large part because of the families we supported with our Christmas charity last year.
VWBro. Jim Russell said that he was proud to report that his grandson Ryan Russell, who has recently served as Master Councilor of Merle E. Luther Chapter in Black Diamond, was raised as a Master Mason last Saturday in Diamond Lodge No. 83.
The Lodge was then closed by the WM at 9:48 p.m., peace and harmony prevailed as it always does at St. John's Lodge No. 9.
