From the East

"Let us not be too particular; it is better to have second-hand diamonds than none at all."
Mark Twain - Following the Equator

On August 13, 1895, right around the time our Lodge would celebrate its 35th birthday, Samuel Clemens (better known to the world by his pen name of Mark Twain) spoke before a capacity crowd at the Seattle Theater at the corner of 3rd Avenue and Cherry Street. He arrived in our fair city flat broke and $70,000 in debt. The failure of his publishing house in the Panic of '93 and the lackluster sales of his most recent works compelled him to begin an international speaking tour to pay off his creditors. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer described his performance as, "A Continuous Laugh." The tour was a
worldwide success. Twain would find himself completely debt free in three short years.

As most of you may know, Twain was a Mason. He was initiated, passed and raised at Polar Star Lodge No. 79 in St. Louis, Missouri in 1861. Yet, despite his affection for our fraternity, the only public reference he made to Masonry occurred in a dinner speech to the New York City Lotus Club on November 10, 1900 where he mentioned, "the grip and the word that lift a man up and make him glad to be alive." But three of his published works also included references to Freemasonry, namely Tom Sawyer's Conspiracy, A Tramp Abroad and Innocents Abroad. The latter contains the following eloquent prose, "...and in a spirit of thankfulness which is entirely unaccountable, considering the slim foundation there was for it, he praised his Maker that he was as he was, and went on enjoying his little life just the same as if he really had been deliberately designed and erected by the great Architect of the Universe."

In 1884 Twain published his greatest contribution to American literature, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Ernest Hemingway described it as, "…the best book we've had. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since." Most of us are familiar with the story of Huck and Jim - a white orphan boy and a fugitive black slave - and their adventures as they navigate the mighty Mississippi river. An allegory of escape and freedom, their journey also represents the struggles we all face as we float down the river of life in search of our own redemption.

An interesting bit of trivia; Mark Twain was born and died in years where Halley's Comet appeared. But unlike that celestial body that materializes every 75 years, the likes of an individual with the same skill and artistry as Mark Twain will, most likely, never be seen again. We are fortunate that his wit, wisdom and stories remain. But more importantly, we are proud to call him a brother.
