LeRoy James "Jim" Ausland - 4/3/13 - 2/19/06
Bro. L. James "Jim" Ausland passed away on Feb. 19, 2006. He was born in Superior, WI, on April 3, 1913 to Anne and Clarence Ausland, and brought with him a twin brother, Lewellyn. He was later joined by a sister, Helen. Jim had one daughter, Marilyn (Jim) Larson, six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He was a sheet metal worker when he joined the fraternity.
Bro. Ausland was initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason in St. John's Lodge No. 9, January 10, 1948, passed to a Fellowcraft, February 14, 1948, and raised a Master Mason, March 13, 1948. He was a member of the Scottish Rite and the Nile Shrine.
Bro. Ausland was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary, brother, Lew, his sister, Helen, and granddaughter, Jacki Garvin. Bro. Ausland was one of the pioneers of hydroplane racing in the Seattle area. In the early 1950's, he joined a group of friends to form "Roostertails, Inc.," of which he was the President, and purchased the unlimited hydroplane "Miss Seattle." His passion for the sport never left him. Jim served with the U.S. Navy in WWII, in the "Seabee's" as a pilot, another lifelong passion. It is said that you could give him a bucket of bolts and he'd build you an airplane!
Before his wife died, they sold their home in the Seattle area and bought property in Yuma, AZ, where they spent many happy years in retirement. Upon Mary's death, Jim moved to the Redmond area to be closer to his daughter, Marilyn. He is also survived by his brother-in-law in Newport, RI, several nieces and nephews.

Stanley E. Kinne - 1/16/22 - 5/12/06
WBro. Stanley E. Kinne was born January 16, 1922, in Lansing, MI. to his parents Addis and Nellie Kinne. Stan grew up with five older brothers and sisters in San Jose, CA, graduating from high school there.
Stan worked many jobs throughout his career, principally in the construction field. He was a landscaping contractor, a building manager, and was a building custodian at the time of his entrance into the fraternity. He loved to remodel homes.
Our brother was initiated as an Entered Apprentice into Elliot Bay Lodge No. 257, November 11, 1960, passed to a Fellowcraft, March 18, 1963, and raised a Master Mason, May 20, 1963. He demonstrated his proficiency on October 21, 1963.
He served as Master of Elliot Bay Lodge in 1970 and 1985. He received his 25 year pin as a member of Elliot Bay. WBro. Kinne was a member of West Seattle-Service Lodge No. 287 until his dimit in 1998. He also was a member of the Nile Shrine and the West Seattle Shrine Club.
Our brother married his wife Beverly in Chehalis, WA, September 11, 1990. The couple had no children.
Following many years of suffering from congestive heart failure, WBro. Kinne passed to the Celestial Lodge, May 12, 2006, leaving his widow, Beverly.

Garth Eldred Short - 3/5/24 - 5/25/06
WBro. Garth Eldred Short was born March 5, 1924, in Hudson, Colorado, to W. H. Short and Loda May Finnell. He grew up with three brothers in Nebraska, joining the US Navy during World War II. He later worked for Sears and then turned his attention to property management and investment. He lived most of his adult life in Edmonds, Washington.
Our brother was initiated in Ravenna Lodge No. 275 as an Entered Apprentice Mason, September 14, 1978, passed to a Fellowcraft, December 14, 1978, and raised a Master Mason, February 8, 1979. WBro. Short was Master of Ravenna Lodge in 1986. He served as Treasurer and Chaplain, as well as Junior and Senior Warden of his mother lodge. He dimited from consolidated Northern Light-Ravenna Lodge No. 279 and Walter F. Meier Lodge No. 281. in 2000 following his affiliation as a plural member of St. John's Lodge No. 9 on September 6, 1995. He served this Washington jurisdiction as Grand Bible Bearer 1998-99.
WBro. Short took an active part in the York Rite and rose to the position of Sir Knight Garth E. Short, Past Right Eminent Grand Commander, Knights Templar, Washington, York Rite Free Masonry. He was elected to the Knights of the York Cross of Honour; the requirements for membership are that each proposed candidate for membership must have presided over a Lodge as a Master, over a Chapter as High Priest, over a Council as Illustrious Master and over a Commandry as Commander.
Our brother Garth passed to the Celestial Lodge, May 25, 2006, in Yuma, Arizona, leaving three brothers, Norris Short of Chimacum, Washington, Neil of Torrance, California and Griffith of Yuma, Arizona; and many nieces and nephews. His wife, Lillian, preceded him in death in 2003. Services were held June 7, 2006, at the Edmonds Masonic Temple.

Frank Everett Houghton - 2/3/20 - 6/21/06
Frank Everett Houghton passed to the Celestial Lodge on June 21, 2006 at the age of 86 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, surrounded by his loving family. Bro. Houghton was born on February 3, 1920 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, to parents Allison and Laura Houghton. His birth mother died when he was an infant, and he was raised by his stepmother, Minnie. He and his brother attended public school in Fitchburg, where he was active as a DeMolay. He met his wife Marian Payne in Eugene, Oregon, where they were married in 1952, raising a son and daughter.
Bro. Houghton attended Fitchburg State Teachers College where he earned his Masters Degree in 1941. He also attended Florida State University, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Graduate School, Washington, D.C.; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and several other institutions including the Army Air Force Paine Field, Everett, Washington. He served in the Army from January 1942 until January 1946 as a Meteorologist and State Climatologist. He was a WWII vet, honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1946. He was a professional climatologist, retiring in 1976.
Bro. Houghton was initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason in St. John's Lodge No. 9, July 29, 1950, passed to a Fellowcraft, October 14, 1950, and raised a Master Mason, January 27, 1951, attaining his proficiency the following month. He received his 40 and 50 year pins for membership in the fraternity.
Bro. Houghton suffered from colon cancer and Alzheimer's in his later years. He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth (Houghton) Wellborn and husband William; also grandsons Jody R. Wellborn, Brian J. Houghton and wife Jessica and Frank E. Houghton all of Las Cruces, New Mexico; great-grandchildren Shane, Spencer, and Kassandra Houghton, also sister-in-law Margueritte (Shea) Houghton of Fitchburg, Massachusetts; and by many cousins.
Frank is preceded in death by his parents, Allison G. Houghton and Laura E. (Brown) Houghton, stepmother Minnie B (Browning) Houghton, wife Marian (Payne) Houghton, son Mark A. Houghton, and brother William S. Houghton.
Funeral service were at St. James Episcopal Church on June 24, 2006. His ashes will be sent to the Fairview Memorial Park, Albuquerque, New Mexico to be with his wife.

Frank J. Young - 11/4/28 - 7/2/06
WBro. Frank J. Young was born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry J. Young in Longview, WA and grew up in Auburn and Algona. He moved to Seattle in February, 1941, and attended Lincoln High School and the University of Washington. He was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War, after which he returned to the University to complete a master's degree in chemical engineering. Shortly after being raised a Master Mason, he began his career as a chemical engineer and moved to California.
For 15 years WBro. Young specialized in the design and startup of ammonia plants, the basic factories for the world's fertilizer industry. His work took him to live in New Jersey, Texas, Manila and Japan. He was head of the Chemical Engineering Department of Jacobs Engineering Group in Pasadena, California, but resigned and returned to the Seattle area to support his mother in her final years. WBro. Young finished his career at the Hanford Works in Richland, carrying out specialized investigative assignments.
At his father's encouragement, WBro. Young was initiated into St. John's Lodge No. 9, January 15, 1955, passed to a Fellowcraft, January 29, 1955, and raised a Master Mason, February 26, 1955. He served as Master of his lodge in 1983 when the lodge made the historic move from the Seattle Masonic Temple to Scottish Rite. He served as acting Secretary for most of the year after WBro. Richard Heck died in 1984. During his Masonic career, WBro. Young was a member of the Oregon Valley Scottish Rite. He was honored for fifty years of Masonic service on July 13, 2005
WBro. Young served as Vice-President of the Clan Macintyre Society, a volunteer organization dedicated to providing a presence at local Scottish Highland Games and fostering Scottish education through scholarship and instruction.
WBro. Young had heart bypass surgery in December, 2003. In June, 2006, he suffered a stroke , paralyzing his right side. Following a pacemaker implant operation, our brother suffered another heart failure and died June 2, 2006. His ashes were laid with those of his parents, who preceded him in death. He leaves two cousins.

Walter John Williams - 9/11/09 - 4/17/06
Bro. Walter J. Williams passed to the Celestial Lodge, April 17, 2006. He was 96 years young. Bro. Williams was born in Butte, Montana, September 11, 1909, to William and Stella Williams. He was raised in and around Butte, graduating from high school in Anaconda, Montana. Bro. Williams studied at Montana School of Mines and received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Montana. He earned his Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Nebraska in 1932.
He and his wife Helen raised five children: Estell (Berteig), Elaine (Runnels), William, Dwayne, and Cindy (Betente). Helen passed away following 25 years of marriage in 1958, and Bro. Williams later married Mabel Connell. They were also married 25 years before Mabel's passing.
Bro. Williams worked for Westinghouse Electric. Among his many accomplishments, Bro. Williams worked to install the electrical system on the world's first atomic submarine, the USS Nautilus.
Bro. Williams was initiated into College View Lodge No. 320 of Lincoln, Nebraska as an Entered Apprentice Mason, November 4, 1934, passed to a Fellowcraft, December 12, 1934, and raised a Master Mason, January 16, 1935. He affiliated with St. John's Lodge No. 9 on March 31, 1945. He received his 50-year pin in 1987. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and the Shrine.
Bro. Williams' many hobbies and pass time favorites included woodworking. For years he crafted wooden toys for needy children.
Our Brother leaves his five children, twelve grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. A Masonic funeral service was held, April 29, 2006, at the Washington Memorial Park at SeaTac, Washington.

Afton Leon King - 6/11/18 - 8/9/06
Brother Afton Leon King was born June 11, 1918, in Morrilton, Arkansas. After graduating from high school in 1937, Bro. King was sent by his aunt and uncle to come to Seattle where he settled on a career with Northern Life Insurance Co that lasted over 60 years. He loved his work and won salesmanship awards by being genuinely interested in his clients. He formed a group casualty business in 1956 covering 1,800 Seattle doctors. In 1962 he started an independent agency, Afton L. King Insurance, while continuing as one of Northern Life's top 12 producers. He spoke at conventions and wrote articles for insurance magazines. In 1978 he was named Northern Life's "Man of the Year."
Bro. King was initiated into Theodore Roosevelt Lodge No. 229, March 30, 1946, passed to a Fellowcraft, May 16, 1946, and raised a Master Mason, June 12, 1946. He received his 50 year recognition pin December of 1996. He was a Mason for sixty years. He held memberships in the Scottish Rite, the Shrine, Elks, and Washington Athletic Club. He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church (now Wallingford) since 1938. He was a founding member of Tillicum Village.
Bro. Afton loved to travel with family throughout the US. He expanded to world travel in 1970, and cruised 35,000 miles around the world in 2005. He was a wood carver, ballroom dancer, genealogist, and excellent magician, pulling off his thumb for children worldwide. He played harmonica, trumpet, and sang in the church choir. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and bowling, and continued working out at the gym until the week before his death.
On August 9, 2006, Bro. King died of a stroke.
Preceded in death by wife, Anita R. King (43 years); their infant son, Bruce B. and granddaughter, Mollola King Blair, and siblings, Sherlon, Ila, Ophelia, he is survived in Seattle by daughters, Linda M. (Michael) Brooks, Janice (Randy) Blair, grandson, Lassik King Blair, great-grandson, Stone Hunter Blair, and wife, Ruth (Lundy) King (16 yrs) and her children, Bill (Barbara) Lundy, Tom Lundy of New Zealand, Beth (Larry) Hamilton of Virginia and step grandchildren, Craig, Jeff, Daniel Hamilton and Charles Lundy.
Services were held at Evergreen Washelli Chapel, Seattle, Monday, August 14th.

Roy Shaffer - 7/25/15 - 7/20/06
WBro. Roy Shaffer was born July 25, 1915, in Seattle, WA.
Our brother was initiated in Ionic Lodge No. 90 as an Entered Apprentice Mason, July 2, 1945, passed to a Fellowcraft, April 17, 1946, and raised a Master Mason, May 15, 1946. WBro. Shaffer was Master of Ionic Lodge in 1977. He served in the offices of Chaplain and Tyler for several years in his mother lodge, as well as Tyler for other Seattle lodges. His proficiency in delivering the lectures earned him the title as Honorary Past Master of many lodges.
WBro. Shaffer was also a member of Richmond - Haller Lake Lodge No. 248 and Walter F. Meier Lodge No. 281. He was active in the Scottish Rite, the York Rite, and the Royal Arch. He was a member of the Eastern Star and served as Patron of Amaranth Rainbow Court. He received his 25, 40, and 50 year pins and was a member of the fraternity for sixty years.
WBro. Shaffer's wife, Milly, preceded him in death in 1982. He later found companionship with Ellen Hanson, and they jointly served in Eastern Star and Amaranth activities.
WBro. Shaffer was a victim of Alzheimer's for the past few years and was in the care of a nursing facility in Anchorage near his son Doug. Our brother passed to the Celestial Lodge, July 20, 2006, in Anchorage, Alaska. WBro. Shaffer will be interred at Acacia Cemetery. Masonic Services are planned to be held this fall.

Frederick H. Magnussen - 10/21/21 - 1/12/06
Bro. Frederick H. Magnussen passed to the Celestial Lodge, January 12, 2006. Our brother was born on October 21, 1921 in Kirkland, WA to Henry and Margit Magnussen. In 1942, Fred married a beautiful young lady named Eleaner Fuller. They soon moved to Willows, California, where Fred managed a dairy farm and milked thirty cows morning and evening.
Near the close of World War II, they returned to Seattle, where Fred worked for Safeway. Although he was a store manager at Safeway, Bro. Magnussen was eager to own his own business. They moved to the tiny town of Waterville, where Fred and Eleaner bought their first business, a meat market. Fred used his skills as a journeyman meat-cutter, a trade he had learned from his father.
Before this move, Bro. Magnussen was initiated into Elliot Bay Lodge No. 257 as an Entered Apprentice Mason, November 9, 1945, passed to a Fellowcraft, November 30, 1945, and raised a Master Mason, December 20, 1945.
Fred bought a grocery store and meat market upon moving to Colfax. Eventually he also owned other businesses, including a nursing home and a garbage business, as well as a dry-cleaning shop and a Laundromat. During the Colfax years, Fred learned to fly airplanes and soon owned his own Beechcraft Bonanza. He was a long time businessman and commercial Maytag Distributor in the Colfax and Spokane area.
It was Eleaner's dream to someday return to the Seattle area to be near family. However, after retirement, it took several years for Fred to finally move to western Washington where he spent the last 14 months of his life.
Bro. Magnussen passed peacefully at home with his family by his side on January 12, 2006. He is survived by his wife of 63 ½ years, Eleaner; two daughters, Lynn Morgan and Leslie and her husband, J. Martin Weil; two sons, Rick and his wife Sally Magnussen and Mark Magnussen; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

William Leiter Hockett - 4/16/13 - 11/1/06
Bro. William Leiter Hockett was born to Eugene and Ethel (Leiter) Hockett in Seattle, Washington, April 16, 1913. He attended and graduated from University School, a private high school, of Victoria, BC. Bro. Hockett was a well known Northwest boat builder, marine contractor, deep sea diver, and marine surveyor before enjoying his eventual retirement.
Our brother was initiated in Ionic Lodge No. 90 as an Entered Apprentice Mason, July 2, 1945, passed to a Fellowcraft, October 10, 1945, and raised a Master Mason, September 17, 1947. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite and the Nile Shrine.
On Wednesday afternoon, November 1, Bro. Hockett attempted a U-turn in the 2400 block of Northwest Market Street and was broadsided by an oncoming vehicle. He later died at Harborview Medical Center. The other driver was not hurt.
Capt. Wm. Leiter Hockett was also a writer and had a number of books published focused on his boat building and commercial diving experience. He is the author of the recently published book: Water Work - 60 Years of Boat Building, Hard Hat Diving.
Bro. Hockett was preceded in death by son Thomas Hockett. He leaves his wife Ruth and four children, sons Lester and Kelley, and daughters Maja and Miranda, and two grandchildren. He was 93 years old.

Joseph Kenneth "Ken" Hall - 1/30/20 - 10/6/06
WBro. Joseph Kenneth "Ken" Hall was born in Shafton, England, January 30, 1920.
WBro. Hall was initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason in Plantegenet Lodge No. 65, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of British Columbia, May 24, 1978, passed to a Fellowcraft, September 27, 1978, and raised a Master Mason, November 22, 1978. He served as Master of Plantegenet Lodge No. 65 in 1986 and 1990, and also served as Master of Ancient Light Lodge No. 88, Delta, BC, in 1998.
WBro. Hall affiliated with Elliot Bay Lodge No. 257, December 18, 1987, and was named an honorary Past Master of that lodge. He was an active adult advisor for the International Order of Job's Daughters.
WBro. Hall passed away peacefully on October 8, 2006 following a lengthy illness. He is survived by his loving wife, Daphne, his nine children, extended family, 28 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at Brighouse United Church, Richmond, BC.

Jack Lamar De Bus - 11/5/38 - 10/22/06
Bro. Jack Lamar De Bus passed to the Celestial Lodge, October 22, 2006. He was approaching his 68th year. Bro. De Bus was born in Anniston, Alabama, November 5, 1938, to Essie Mae Digsby. He left home at an early age to seek his fortune in the West.
Bro. De Bus arrived in Southern California and learned to be a heavy equipment mechanic. He and his wife Carol started a family and shortly thereafter went to Alaska to work on the oil pipeline. He re-located his family to Seattle to wok for Boeing. He joined the Operating Engineers union and spent time traveling the Northwest as a heavy equipment mechanic. During that time he also invented and developed a Green Veneer Clipper, for plywood.
Bro. De Bus was initiated into St. John's Lodge No. 9 as an Entered Apprentice Mason, June 28, 1969, passed to a Fellowcraft, July 26, 1969, and raised a Master Mason, September 27, 1969. One of the things he was most proud of was his affiliation with the Freemasons and the Shriners. He was 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason.
Our Bro. sold his Green Veneer Clipper design to Premier Gear Works in 1972 and also began to work for the company, moving his family to Portland, OR. He was extremely proud of his innovation in this field. He was able to travel all over the world installing plywood equipment and setting up lumber plants in developing countries. He concluded his work as an independent contractor and security advisor until his retirement.
In early 2004, Jack and Maxine began a whirlwind romance. They enjoyed traveling to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and spending quiet time in LaPine, OR. They also took various camping trips in their motor home, always accompanied by their faithful; companion, Big Dog.
Bro. Jack was preceded in death by his second wife, Eve, and is survived by his third wife Maxine, daughter Jackie (Bruce) Campbell, son James De Bus, two step-sons, and eleven grandchildren.
Following a cancer diagnosis this spring, Bro. De Bus passed to that Celestial Lodge, October 22, 2006. A Masonic service was held in his memory in Portland, October 27, conducted by members of Columbia Lodge No. 114 and Friendship Lodge No. 160 of the Oregon Grand Lodge of Ancient Free & Accepted Masons.

Loren Lavern Loesell - 8/15/19 - 10/29/06
Bro. Loren Lavern Loesell was born in Alma, Wisconsin, August 15, 1919, to Adeline and Arnold Loesell. He Graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1939 and played amateur hockey at the Civic Ice Arena before World War II broke out. Bro. Loesell was called up into the Army's 41st Division and served 3½ years in the South Pacific, Philippines and New Guinea. Following discharge, Bro. Loesell worked for Frederick & Nelson for 32 years. While there, he was catcher on Frederick & Nelson's fast pitch baseball team until he was 55 years old. He also bowled for many years.
Bro. Loesell was initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason in St. John's Lodge No. 9, November 29, 1941, passed to a Fellowcraft, February 28, 1942, and raised a Master Mason, March 14, 1942. He was a Life Member of the fraternity and a member of St. John's for sixty-four years.
Our brother suffered from diabetes and was on kidney dialysis sine June of this year. He passed away on October 29, 2006. He was preceded in death by his parents, Adeline and Arnold Loesell, his brother, Harlan, and sister, Marjorie. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lorene; his son, Loren, Jr.; his son, Mark; daughter-in-law, Eva; granddaughter, Kristina, and grandson, Ryan. A memorial service will be held November 18, at 2:00 p.m. at Acacia Funeral Home.
