July 2007
From the East
Charles H Tupper, Master

ach year St. John’s Lodge No. 9 devotes one meeting to just having fun and we add some type of contest or other entertaining sideline to our Stated Communication in July.

Our ladies and those who don't usually attend Lodge are specifically invited to this one.   This meeting has been named Herb's Night after a Brother who lived in Hawaii and attended his Lodge each July when he came home to Seattle for the summer.

For the past few years this meeting has been held with a Hawaiian theme in honor of Herb's winter home.   We invite our Brothers and their significant others to this meeting and we try to entertain everyone and hold the business of the Lodge to a bare minimum.  Herb left us for the Grand Lodge in the sky some years ago but we will continue to remember his dedication to attend each and every summer.  The night is still called Herb's Night though.  We know that Herb, and our other deceased Brothers, will be with us in spirit just to enjoy the evening.

This year we will make a change from the Hawaiian theme and will have a NW Casual dress theme with a contest for the wildest T shirt or wild shirt.  It won’t matter what type of shirt it is so long as it is sufficiently wild to garner one of our wonderful top prizes which we will award to the three top winners.  The meeting will retain the name Herb's Night in order that we might always think of our absent members each July with a celebration of happy times among Brethren and their significant others.

I have some surprises in store at this meeting for some of our members.  You really want to attend if you are in town to see what I have up my sleeve besides my arm.  If you are not a member of St. John's Lodge and are reading this you are included in the contest and have just as good a chance at winning one of our prizes as do the members of the Lodge.  In the middle of the summer there aren’t very many Lodges that are meeting so this is an opportunity to attend Lodge and have a fun time.

The Lodge picnic is coming up on August 12th.  This is a great opportunity to get outdoors and have a good time with the families and children of our membership.  Steaks, hot dogs, and hamburgers will be the fare and the membership will bring all the extras to this affair.  Bro. George Rine and our Picnic Committee have been working hard on this so plan on an event-filled day with excellent food and fellowship.

147TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER

St. John’s was granted a charter by the Grand Lodge of Washington, September 4, 1860.  To commemorate this event, Bro. Iain Cameron has again promised a full evening of good food, fellowship, and entertainment.

We are excited to have VWBro. James W. Foote as our featured guest, who will recreate the persona of brother Freemason Theodore Roosevelt, 26th president of the United States.  Bro. Foote is an actor/historian who spends much of his time in character at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, Long Island, NY.

All this will take place at the downtown Seattle College Club, Saturday evening, September 8.

BROTHERLY LOVE AT WORK!

When WBros. Joseph Lund, Bill Collison, and I presented the Lodge’s $5,000 check for the accelerated reading program at Seattle’s Sacajewea Elementary School, a boy, about 11 year’s old, told me that he already won his bike and now helps his little sister every day with her reading so that she can get her own bike soon.  That’s the spirit.  Congrats to WBro. Lund and St. John’s.  s/WBro. Helmuth Svoboda

SUMMER MEETING FEATURES HERB’S NIGHT

3rd Wednesday in July; Ladies welcome!

A bit of this and a bit of that will accompany a touch of a bit of Irish folk music at our annual Herb’s Night, July 18.  Worshipful Master Charlie Tupper invites all Masons to join us for fun and celebration and a little bit of business at our July Stated Communication.

A special evening of entertainment and instruction will be held, beginning with dinner at 6:15pm.  Following our formal opening at 7:30, we will call to refreshment and invite the ladies to join us.  Much of the routine of the meeting will be eliminated or delayed.  Throughout the evening, we will be honoring our brothers who have meant so much to us, including a recognition of Bro. Bernie Gordon’s 40 years of Masonic service.  A few other brothers are in for a surprise, as well.

“Herb’s Night” was created to honor our members we seldom have the opportunity to meet, and was named after one of our “snow birds” who lived 9 months of the year in Hawaii.  To encourage a “casual” dress approach, WBro. Tupper will be awarding a prize for the “Wildest T-Shirt or shirt.”

We anticipate the highlight of the evening will be music and story telling by Ms Maggie Bennett, whose talent includes Irish ballads accompanied by Irish harp!  She is a respected author and holds a Ph.D. in Folklore from the University of Washington.  An accomplished folksinger and storyteller, she has performed widely for radio, television, schools, churches, clubs, festivals, senior centers, and through recordings

The ladies are invited to join us for dinner and to share in the evening’s activities.

We particularly want our snow birds and infrequent attendees to be a part of this.  Please call the secretary, VWBro. Jim Russell, at (206) 623-0261 if you can join us, so that we may know how many to expect for dinner.

LODGE BROTHERS TO HOST TEEN FEED

Monday, July 16th, we will send our Teen Feed crew to feed approximately 40 homeless teenagers in the University District.  Bros. Jim Wold and James Swift will handle the shopping, and the rest of the St. John’s crew will cook and serve. The young people are most grateful to receive a hot delicious meal and a tasty dessert.

Bro. Wold is calling for any brother who wants to assist with the next Teen Feed in the University District to contact him at 425 357-6867 or woldfamily@msn.com. We will meet at the University Lutheran Church, 1604 NE 50th  around 5pm, cook dinner, serve, clean up, and be done around 9-9:30.
