John Rogers Presentation Night

n the evening of January 31st WB Joseph Lund, Chairman of our Accelerated Reader Committee, along with WB Bill Collison, Aundie Collison, WB Ken Lane Sr., and VW Bro. Chuck Brockway went to John Rogers School to deliver four bicycles for the Spring Semester and a five thousand dollar check for the Accel-

erated Reader program for the calendar year 2007.

Following the presentation the committee members took a tour of the school and some of the students showed them how the  Program works.   This marked the first time that St. John's Lodge members have been taken througout the school and given demonstrations of how the program we fund works for the kids.

Also noted by our committee school library.   When St. John's began the program nine years ago at John Rogers School the library shelves were almost empty.   Today it is almost becoming a problem for the librarian to fit new volumes on the shelves.  From the elementary school libraries that this webmaster has seen this shows as a major accomplishment.

Accelerated Reader books are kept in special boxes which are sorted into reading skill groups.  Students choose books from the large selection that are at or slightly above their present reading level.  They read the book and then sit down at the computer and take the Accelerated Reader test for that particular story.  The computer grades the student on comprehension,

Our committee members made a point of visiting the mobile home classroom of LAP Debbie McDonald who has been instrumental with the Accelerated Reader program.   Her enthusiasm has brought into the Accelerated Reader program principals and teachers from Cedar Way Elementary and Sacajawea Elementary Schools.   Together we are busy raising the reading skill level of students in all three schools.
