January 2008

FROM THE EAST
Jim Wold, Master

ut with the old and in with the new. January is a time for renewal. It's the New Year and along with it, come resolutions and hopes for the coming year. January is also a time for reflection on last year's accomplishments and losses.

It is a time for remembering lost loved ones and of future growth. It is a time for remembering our daily blessings and looking toward the future.

As Master of St. John's Lodge No. 9, I cannot help but to look to the future. This coming year holds many special treasures for all of us. Table Lodge, the Family Brunch, Herbs Night, the Open Air Master Mason degree (which we are putting on this year as well as opening and closing lodge at the Masonic Park), Youth Programs, lodge outings, such as Ride the Ducks and Bus Tour to Leavenworth for Oktoberfest, to name a few. It will be a busy year.

But, I would be remiss if I didn't look back and pay tribute to the Past Masters, trustees and members of the  lodge who left our lodge in its current state, which is very strong and vibrant.

Our membership and financial portfolio continue to grow and that is something we can all appreciate. I thank you for your past contributions and for your continuing support.

Looking back to the past year, I'm sure the Scythe of Time has visited most of our families. We grieve our loved ones passing, but know they are in a better place. We as Masons are taught of the immortality of the soul. We will see that the good works started by our loved ones continue. And, that their memory stays close to our hearts.

Looking to the future, we must continue to grow our lodge and fraternity. We need to attract good men who are looking to improve themselves and make a difference in our community. We have several new members who have yet to find their niche within our lodge. We as officers, trustees and older members need to help our newer members find their place and become active participants in our journey.

We have all traveled that rough and rugged road, at one time or another.

Let us not forget to stop and pick up those who need a ride, both literally and figuratively;  to go that extra step to make sure that every brother who wants to come to lodge has a way to get there.

Let us help a brother understand what his duties are and what is expected of him. Remember to praise in public and reprimand in private.

Let us be quick to offer a friendly hello to a visitor and make him feel welcome in our lodge.  And let us all work together in harmony for the betterment of our families, our communities and ourselves.

We have a great lodge, with a long and esteemed record of service to our members and community. As we enter 2008, let us make some new memories for which we may be proud.

GOOD FOOD!  GOOD FELLOWSHIP!  COME TO LODGE!

January marks the beginning of a new calendar year and a new Masonic year for St. John's.  Worshipful Master Jim Wold encourages all brothers within the sound of the gavel to come join us in our monthly celebration of spirit, friendship, and festive table.  To our lodge brothers, we invite you to share in our deliberations.  We invite you to give  good council and

help to be part of our continuing growth and fellowship.

At St. John's, we always begin our monthly gatherings with a social hour around 5:30, with a delicious complimentary dinner served at 6:15 followed by an interesting program of education or entertainment prior to our 7:30pm stated communication.  We try to conclude the evening shortly after 9pm, although we have  been  known  to  have  too  good a  time  and too

much to do to always meet that self-imposed deadline.  Good friends and good brothers are hard to leave behind for another whole month!

Our next stated communication will be Wednesday, January 16.  Representatives from the Sea Scouts will give us an update on how their 'shipmates' are doing.    WBro. Charlie Tupper will speak to us about how to prepare to become the Worshipful Master of a Masonic Lodge.

Please make your dinner reservations with the secretary at 206 623-0261 or email by Friday, January 11th prior to the meeting.  All dinners are hosted by St. John's!

If you need a ride, the secretary will be happy to find one for you.  Do you know of a brother who has not attended lodge in a while?  Call him and ask if you can pick him up and bring him to lodge for a little fellowship and fun!

Entered Apprentices and Fellowcrafts are always welcome, too.

NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS

WBro. Charles Tupper reports that the first scheduled outside event for 2008 will be an outing to the new movie sequel National Treasure: Book of Secrets.  This first outing will be Friday, January 18.  Meet at the Oak Tree Cinima at 7:15pm for the 7:30 Showing.  Ladies and gents, both.  He would like an indication who will be attending.  (206 406-8670)

Review in a Hurry:  Nicolas Cage is on the trail of another big stash, led by clues steeped in wild conspiracies and U.S. history, in a near-exact replica of National Treasure numero uno. Hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? Though adding Dame Helen Mirren to the mix to sparkle up this sequel sure doesn't hurt.

The Bigger Picture:  National Treasure is back, and this time it has, um, a subtitle! The Book of Secrets in question is a hush-hush read that's passed down from president to president, for their eyes only, and it's one of many clues leading treasure hunter Ben Gates (Cage) to another billion-dollar bonanza.

GRAND LODGE FLOOD RELIEF

Grand Master Wayne Smith has appealed to lodges and brothers to assist worthy Masons who have been victims of heavy flooding in Western Washington.  A special flood relief fund has been established by Grand Lodge to facilitate this help.  In response to this appeal, the brethren of St. John's reached into what remained of our emergency relief budget for 2007 and sent $5,486 to assist worthy brothers and their families impacted by the December flooding in Western Washington.

REGIONAL WORKSHOP

A regional workshop will be held in Everett on January 26th for brothers throughout the jurisdiction who wish to gain knowledge, share experience, and renew enthusiasm.  The different topics offered run the full course of elementary and fundamental basics for  the  new Mason  to providing  training tool for long

planning for the lodge.  Each session is a chance to share and learn about events, activities and training that other lodges have used to grow membership and attendance, gain public exposure and benefit the membership.  Few leave these workshops without a revitalized sense of dedication and purpose on both a personal and lodge level.

Pre-registration fee will be $10 to cover lunch and materials, or $12 will be accepted at the door.

148th ANNIVERSARY MARK IT FOR SEPTEMBER 13TH!

WBro. Jim Wold promises a great evening of entertainment on September 13th for our 148th anniversary celebration.  First, the principal entertainment will be artist Bobby Bruce, who performs in the character and style of Neil Diamond.  The Canadian impersonator not only mimics the great Neil Diamond to a tee but also implants some of his own pizzazz and style, a combination so clever and disarming that he "brings the house down."

The venue for the anniversary celebration will be the Lake Ballinger Golf Club, Mountlake Terrace.  This is adjacent to the Nile Shrine and allows us to choose our own caterer.  Bro. Iain Cameron again chairs this annual event marking the birthday of our lodge (September 4, 1860).

DE MOLAY BREAKFAST

OF CHAMPIONS 2008

VWBro. Charles Brockway invites the brethren to share in a DeMolay fund raising breakfast at the Landmark on the Sound on Saturday, February 23.  Guest speaker will be former Seahawk center Robbie Tobeck.

Tickets are $100.  No further donation will be expected at this event which kicks off at 8:30am.  All proceeds will go to the Washington DeMolay Foundation for the DeMolays of Washington.

St. John's Company Store is stocked with wonderful items to please both the buyer and to promote Freemasonry and the lodge.  WBro. Hans Wehl has an inventory of jackets, caps, vests, notebooks and note pads, as well as pens and other assortments.  If you want a beautiful Past Master's wristwatch, ask for Hans.

Wrapping gifts for needy Seattle families at Christmas:  Sara Lane, Matt LaCroix, Brian Downey (standing) Ken Lane, Jr., and Ken Lane, Sr.  Not pictured but working diligently off camera was Darlene Lane.
