reetings from the East! It’s hard to
believe the year is already half over, or as the
pragmatist would say, we still have half a year to go.
June is a busy month for St. John’s.
It’s equally hard to believe that some lodges go dark
during the summer; we’re just getting started.
Thanks go to our Senior Warden, Chris Carney for
organizing our Fabulous Brunch at Ivar’s Salmon House. Over 150
members and guests attended. The food was great as usual and the
view is one of the best in Seattle.
June 12th
-14th is the annual Grand Lodge
communication, in Wenatchee, where Masons from around the
State meet and elect our new leadership for the upcoming
year. Thank you to MWBro. Wayne I. Smith for his work and
dedication to the Craft this past year and congratulations
to soon-to-be MWBro. Doug Tucker on his expected advancement
to Grand Master. I would also like to extend
congratulations to St. John’s own RWBro. Gale Kenney on his
advancement to Deputy Grand Master. We are very proud of
you, Gale!
I look forward to seeing the St. John’s
gang in Wenatchee for some fellowship and fun.
June is also the end of the school year for
Seattle students and our scholarship committee has been working
diligently to provide assistance to those students in need. Our
scholarship recipients and their families will be in attendance at
our next stated communication on June 18th. It will be a
chance for us to meet these worthy students and their families and
hear about what they plan to study and their plans for the future.
Thank you to the scholarship committee for its diligence in
selecting worthy candidates and to our Lodge for supporting this
endeavor and making a positive difference in these students’ lives.
As of this writing, the final entertainment plans
for Herb’s Night (July 16th) are not in place, but I can
tell you it will have an Italian theme, it will be casual dress and
I believe we have a few 50-year pins and one 40-year pin to give
out. It will be a fun night.
A few days later (July 19th), our
Past Master Charlie Tupper has arranged for our Lodge to Ride the
Ducks. This should be a lot of fun for our members and families.
This is a sold out event!
July 26th at Masonic Park at 10am, we
will be having a dressed rehearsal for the Open Air Degree, on
August 2nd. Everyone involved is expected to be there.
We still need nine Fellowcrafts. These are non-speaking parts and
should be fun for anyone to do. The Park agreed to let our group
camp for free this weekend in the Peterson Hall area.
July 26th is also the evening of the
Seafair Torchlight Parade and proves problematic for me, as I will
be at the Park. If you are interested in representing our Lodge in
this Parade, please let me know. We have room for one to ride the
Masonic Float and need 5-6 walkers to carry our banner. Remember,
this is a long Parade with more than 300,000 lining the streets of
Seattle.
As you can see, we are just getting started. So
pace yourself, and stay hydrated.

JUNE IS BUSTING
OUT ALL OVER!
Take a look at our calendar and you’ll see that
June (and July) will be busy months for those who want to get in on
the action around St. John’s! You’ve already missed a long range
planning meeting, scholarship decisions, and investigations of two
or three petitioners. There’s been Little League baseball as played
by our Little League Masons team, which has been playing its hearts
out. To catch what’s ahead, refer to our busy summer calendar.
On June 16th, some brothers will be
heading out to King Solomon Lodge in Auburn to try to get their
bellies filled with strawberry shortcake, while others stay closer
to home to fill the bellies of homeless teens in the University
District.
Worshipful Master Jim Wold encourages everyone to
make it out to our stated communication on Wednesday, June 18th,
when we will host the recipients of our scholarships for this coming
year and their families. Mr. Josef Krebs from the Seattle Youth
Symphony will be speaking to the lodge on the Symphony and he is
trying to round up a performance group or at least a couple kids to
say hi.
We’ll be balloting on a few petitions and celebrating a birthday or
three.
Worshipful Master Jim Wold invites all Masons
to join us for a full evening of entertainment and business.
Dinner begins at 6:15. As always, please let the Secretary know you
(and a guest?) will be in attendance so we can give the chef an accurate
count!
GRAND LODGE 151st
ANNUAL COMMUNICATION
Twenty-one members of St. John’s plan to attend the 151st
annual communication of Grand Lodge June 12 – 14 in Wenatchee, some as
delegates representing other lodges. Seven
candidates for Junior Grand Warden have announced their availability.
Five presented themselves at our May communication. RWBro. Gale Kenney
of St. John’s should be elected Deputy
Grand Master, and R.W. Brother Doug Tucker will serve as Grand
Master for 2008 - 2009.
Seattle Underground Tour
June 28
On
Saturday afternoon, June 28th at 3 PM, members and guests of St. John’s will revisit
Seattle Underground. The guide for the tour is a Mason who has copies
of both volumes of our lodge history and will be especially prepared to
address our interests. The cost of this tour will be borne by the
lodge.
Call Charlie Tupper (206 406-8670), event chair, for arrangements.
ST. JOHN’S
LEAVENWORTH OKTOBERFEST
It’s
fast approaching! The St. John’s Leavenworth Oktoberfest tour is open
to those who want to share this experience with their families. A
chartered bus will leave the Northgate park & ride October 4th
about 8:30am and will return that evening. The brethren of Zarthan
Lodge No. 148 (Leavenworth) will be preparing dinner about 5pm. The
cost of the trip is only $10 per person (payable to “Charles Tupper”).
The UW Huskies will be playing an “away” game that weekend.
Only twenty-one seats remain available (of 59) for the bus to
Leavenworth. We will open the trip up to those outside our lodge if
room remains available after mid-July.

Michael Palko-Dean, Master of King Solomon Lodge No. 60,
has invited the brethren of St. John’s to attend the King
Solomon annual strawberry feed, Monday, June 16. Shortcake will
be served at 6:30, followed by a regular stated meeting of the
Auburn lodge. Several brethren from St. John's will be smacking
their lips all the way to Auburn!
NEWS FROM BROTHERS OF ST. JOHN’S
Bro.
David Karpilow is rehabilitating at The Caroline Kline Galland Home on
Seward Park Ave. So., having broken several bones in a bad fall at his
apartment. A phone call or visit would be appreciated. J Bro.
James Swift will be traveling through Europe for the month of June for
one last Hoorah before heading to Kyrgyzstan on July 3rd to
serve a couple of years in the Peace Corps teaching English!
RWBro. Gale Kenney announces that he has become engaged to be married.
He adds that his fiancé recognizes that this will be a two year
engagement, as he has certain commitments to the fraternity as he
approaches the Grand East. Bro. George Rine broke his left arm in a fall at practice of the Master
Mason degree. They say practice makes perfect – but that’s only true if
you practice perfectly!
Fellowcraft Conferral
Esoterika
Lodge No. 316 will be conferring a Fellowcraft degree at the
MRC (Landmark on the Sound) on July 8th. Bro. Dr. Bill
Feldner of St. John's will be passed to a FC at that degree,
Tuesday, 7pm. All FCs and MMs are invited to share in this
beautiful degree in Zenith (Des Moines).
Ride the Duck
The Ride the Duck
outing will be July 19. This is an exclusive lodge outing, with
all seats filled. This excursion will begin at 10am Saturday,
July 19th, followed by lunch at the Greenwood Masonic
Center.
GREENWOOD CAR
SHOW JUNE 28
One of the largest car shows in the area, with up
to 500 cars and 20,000 visitors to Greenwood Avenue.
The 16th
annual Greenwood Classic Car and Rod Show is
Seattle’s biggest showcase of cars across the Northwest. More
than 20,000 visitors and 500 cars will line the streets of
Greenwood Avenue, from N. 72nd to N. 90th,
with bands, food vendors and craft booths.
Hot rods, roadsters, muscle cars and even some
"hopping" low riders will be at the car show on the fourth Saturday in
June. Great food and craft vendors also appear in the middle of the
show area. Greenwood Lodge No. 253 will offer hot dogs in front of the
Greenwood Masonic Center.
This would be a great way for those who will
attend the Underground Tour to make a day of it. In the morning
attend the Car Show and hot dogs and then meet in Pioneer Square at 3 PM
for the Tour, waterfront walk, and Ivar's seafood bar for dinner.
An all around wonderful way to spend a Seattle Saturday in June!
OPEN AIR DEGREE
Make
your plans now to attend the Master Mason Open Air degree at the Masonic
Park, Saturday, August 2nd! Our St. John's team will be
conferring the degree on possibly two candidates. This is the first
time our lodge has been invited to perform at this beautiful open air
venue.
