St. John's Lodge No. 9's 2008 Little
League Team
Northwest League - Little League Champions 2008
The players on Masons St.
John's Lodge, our sponsored Little League Major's team, have played their hearts out this year. They won the Northwest Little League Championship at Soundview Field before a good crowd.
This year's schedule only had one game that was not played. The regular season began on April 7th and the team played two or three games each week for the next six weeks. The regular season wound up on May 21st (the day of our May Stated) at Soundview Field. The team's record for the regular season was 9 - 6. During this time they had fun, practiced, and played hard. They came in second by 1/2 game to the Seattle Police team during the regular season and the records were used to seed the NWLL Championship Tournament.
In the Championship Tournament Masons St. John's Lodge won their first two playoff games against Netdesk on May 28th and against Swanson's on May 30th. On Monday, June 2nd the team met a stumbling block. The Seattle Police Team came away victorious. The boys then played a rematch and won against Netdesk and this win earned them a spot against the Seattle Police team on Saturday, June 7th.
Our Masons St. John's Lodge team then defeated the Seattle Police team for the Championship.
For the Championship game the league provided PA announcers and two umpires. They had all the trappings necessary to announce and umpire an exciting game - including an outfield fence.
The final score of the Championship game was 10-4 and the Masons played very well as a team. During the game the Masons caught an opposing player trying for an extra base in a rundown between second and third base to stop a huge threat early in the game. If that wasn't enough for one game they went on to turn a rare double play in the last inning to shorten the game to one final out and end the final threat from the opposing team. It was a fun game to watch and the score was within reach of the Seattle Police team until the last inning. Both teams played a good clean game and both played hard. Both are to be commended for their effort. The trophy's were immediately distributed and our team proudly took their individual trophys home.
Preceding the Championship game was the annual picnic and Little League awards ceremony. Masons, St. John's Lodge team member Jacob Hostetler received the Sportsman Award for 2008 at that ceremony and everyone enjoyed the hamburgers and hot dogs. There was food in abundance and, although there were threatening clouds, not a drop of rain fell on the proceedings.
Members of the past Masons St. John's Lodge team which won the Tournament of Champions three years ago came down for the festivities. These older boys wore their old team hats and jerseys (at least those jerseys that still fit) offered advice, talked to, and cheered on todays members of their old team. They clung to the dugout fence throughout the game. They joined in the team yells and offered their advice and support. This was inspirational and showed the pride that the boys who have played on our team have for their membership in this select Little League Baseball club.
The winner of the League Championship is automatically entered in the North Seattle Tournament of Champions at Gilman Field which is located at 923 NW 54th St. The Mason's first game in that tournament was played on Saturday, June 14th at 12:00 PM. Our team won that game by a score of 8 to 3. The opponent was the champion of the North Central league, Seattle Stained Glass. The next contest was held on Monday, June 16th at 5:30 PM at Gilman Field where our team met Best Plumbing, the Queen Anne Champion team. The Best Plumbing team proved too much for our team and won by a score of 4-0 bringing to an end the Masons' St. John's Lodge Little League team's year.
We have enjoyed following our team throughout this year and look forward to another exciting year of baseball fromt hem next year! We thank them for their efforts and we are very proud of our team and of our involvement with Little League Baseball in Seattle.
WBro.
Ken Lane Jr., our Treasurer and the coach of the team, always invites all
Brothers to come out and support our team. Tickets are free and the boys really play harder when we attend the games. Our attendance makes them feel that the team "owners" really take an interest in how well they do. Our Little League teams are proud to be sponsored by St. John's Lodge and we are proud to help our youth. Supporting these players is important.
Ticket price cannot be an object as entrance
to the ball park really is free.
