July Stated Communication

OPENING OF LODGE

The Lodge opened on the first degree at 4;30pm, the flag posted in the East.  The Lodge was immediately called from labor to refreshment until the sound of the gavel in the East.

HERB’S NIGHT ENTERTAINMENT

The evening opened with dinner at 6:15, accompanied by two members of the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra.  Two other musicians performed for our guests when

 lodge was later called back to labor.  Our caterer Bro. Steve Hofer was issued a certificate of appreciation for his many years of providing meals to St. John's.  Bro. Hofer is selling his business and retiring.

INTRODUCTIONS

The Worshipful Master called upon the Senior Deacon to introduce our Masonic visitors with the exception of Masters, Wardens, and Grand Lodge officers and committeemen.  In attendance and receiving a warm St. John’s welcome were three visiting brothers, Bro. Elmer Talavera (Occidental Lodge No. 72), Bro. Alex Jouravlev (North Hill Lodge No. 210), and WBro. Jim Lumsden (Greenwood Lodge No. 253)

The Master also invited those brethren who were accompanied by their ladies to introduce their guests.

The Senior Warden introduced Bro. Michael Mann, Senior Warden of  Alki Lodge No. 152. The Master introduced VWBro. Mike Davis, Master of Queen Anne Lodge No. 242, and WBro. Joseph Lund, Master of Esoterika Lodge No. 316.   They were accorded the public Grand Honors.

 

 

 

The Master then instructed the Senior Deacon to escort the Grand Lodge officers and committeemen East of the Altar and shook each by the hand as he announced their names.  In attendance were WBro. Charles Tupper (technology), VWBro. Bill Werner (research & education chair), WBro. Hans Wehl (public schools), WBro. Larry Blake (public relations), WBro. Darrel Womack (photography chair), VWBro. Charles Brockway (membership

development), WBro. Terry Grove (CHIP chair), VWBro. Mike Davis (Pres. CHIP Foundation), VWBro. Steve Pennington (Special Deputy), VWBro. Marvin Pearson

 (Deputy of the Grand Master District No. 4),  VWBro. Jim Russell (Junior Grand Steward), VWBro. Alden Sarmiento (Senior Grand Deacon), VWBro. Coe Tug Morgan (Grand Historian), MWBro. Al Jorgensen (jurisprudence), RWBro. David Owen (Grand Secretary), RWBro. G. Santy Lascano (Deputy Grand Master), all of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Washington.  They were accorded the public Grand Honors.

The Master then instructed the Senior Deacon to seek out the Grand Master.  MWBro. Gale Kenney, Grand Master of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Washington was escorted to the East, accorded the public Grand Honors, and invited to remain in the East.

TREASURER’S REPORT

The Treasurer reported that the Lodge remains “solvent.”

50 YEAR PIN PRESENTED

The Master requested RWBro. Santy Lascano to preside for a special ceremony to honor a brother of the lodge.  RWBro. Lascano was assisted by VWBro. Alden Sarmiento, who acted as Senior Deacon.

WBro. Hans Wehl was recognized for achieving fifty years in Freemasonry.  WBro. Wehl was initiated an Entered Apprentice Mason in Elliot Bay Lodge No. 257, on July 10, 1959, passed to a Fellowcraft September 15, 1959, and raised a Master Mason November 13, 1959.    Our honored brother was escorted to stations in the South and West and then to the altar, where MWBro. Gale Kenney presented him with a pin, card, and certificate in recognition of fifty years of service to the fraternity.  He was accorded the public Grand Honors and responded with words of appreciation. 

COMMUNICATIONS

Trestleboards and letters of communication were distributed.  Concerning each, the Secretary reported the following:

We have received thank-you notes from the girls of Southgate Rainbow Assembly #71 and Kent Assembly #87 for our contributions to their organizations.

A special communication of Grand Lodge will convene Saturday, July 25, to constitute and install officers of Krucible Lodge No. 318 of Tacoma.  Franklin Lodge No. 5 and Port Townsend Lodge No. 6 will be celebrating 150 years as lodges within our Grand Jurisdiction on Saturday, August 15.  The reconstitution of Franklin Lodge will open at 10am at Port Gamble; that of Port Townsend Lodge will follow at 2pm in Port Townsend.  Members of Franklin Lodge played a major part in helping to establish St. John's Lodge No. 9.

Garfield Lodge No. 41 invites all to attend an annual salmon BBQ, Thursday, August 20, at Pioneer Park in LaConner at 6pm, followed by a 7:30 stated meeting at the Lodge. 

The Blue Nile Children’s Organization announces two events to raise money for the orphans program in Ethiopia.  The first will be a movie with food and a traditional coffee ceremony this Saturday, July 18.  The other will be a silent auction and speaker at St. Mark’s Cathedral Church,  Saturday, October 3.

Newsletters and Trestleboards have been received from the Phinney Neighborhood Association, the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras, and Eureka Lodge No. 72.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Bro. David Flood reported that the annual St. John's Lodge family picnic will be Sunday, August 9, at the Nile Shrine picnic area “B.”  Everyone should get their reservations in to the Secretary by Wednesday, August 5.

The Master announced that the next Lodge officers meeting will be Tuesday,, August 11, at 6:30pm.

VWBro. Ashley Brinkley has arranged a St. John's tour of the Museum of Flight for Thursday, August 6.  We will meet at the entrance to the Museum at 5:30pm.  One of our Masonic brethren is a tour guide and will take us on a private tour through the facility.  A typical tour is an hour in length.  We are free to remain for our own individual viewing.  McCormick and Schmick's Wings Cafe offers salads, sandwiches, and hot entrees.  The tour is free to the public after 5pm on the first Thursday of each month.  There is ample free parking on the west side of the Museum.  A show of hands indicated that 15-20 people were interested in participation.

MEMORIAL SCROLL

A memorial scroll was read for Bro. David Leon Karpilow, followed by remembrances from WBros. Joseph Lund, Charles Tupper, and Ashley Brinkley and a memorial service led by Bro. Brian Downie.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The brethren were reminded of the following dates of interest:

  • August 1 (8am):  Masonic Park Open Air degree featuring RCMP

  • August 6 (5:30):  Museum of Flight Lodge outing

  • August 9(11am – 4pm):  Rust Memorial Lodge picnic at Nile (Sunday)

  • August 12 (6pm):  Board of Trustees

  • August 19 (6:15pm) 7:30pm:  St. John’s 9 (dinner) Stated (casual dress)

GOOD OF THE ORDER

WBro. Charles Tupper reminded the brethren that details of the annual picnic are available on the St. John's website.

WBro. Roger Barnstead announced that he will be retiring from the Coast Guard and invited all to a retirement party MC’d by VWBro. Steve Pennington which will be held September 30 at the Nile Shrine.

VWBro. Marv Pierson reminded the brethren and guests that the Greenwood Seafair Parade will be next Wednesday, July 22.  Greenwood Lodge No. 253 will be sponsoring the Occidental Masonic Float.  WBro. Terry Grove announced that the Everett Valley of the Scottish Rite will be hosting its 100th anniversary celebration at the Everett Naval Base Grand Vista Ballroom on Saturday, October 24.  RWBro. David Owen invited all to share in a BBQ sponsored by Harmony Lodge No. 18 on Tuesday, August 4.  VWBro. Bill Werner invited all to share in a Texas-style fajita party followed by Masonic education tomorrow evening in Issaquah.  He added that Myrtle Lodge will also be hosting a motorcycle picnic starting from Triple X Root Beer in Issaquah on Sunday.  VWBro. Coe Morgan invited all Masons to attend the Daylight Lodge No. 232 stated communication on Saturday, August 15.

VWBro. Charles Brockway invited MWBro. Gale Kenney to join with him in honoring several brothers who distributed food and gifts to families of the 555th Engineer Brigade at Fort Lewis last December.  Among those who helped in Operation Kid Smile and received honors were brothers David Flood, Raymond Gehrig, Brian Downie, George Rine, James Phelen, Al Jorgensen, Hans Wehl and wife Sharon, Charles Brockway and wife Sherla.  Volunteers Phillip See, Bill Collison, and Skip Albertson who were not present this evening were also thanked.

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS

WBro. Allan Pinch (7/22/48) was honored with a rendition of “Happy Birthday” to celebrate achieving one more year in his journey through life.

CALL FROM REFRESHMENT TO LABOR

Following the dismissal of our guests, the Lodge was called from refreshment to labor on the first degree.

Thirty-three members and twelve visitors were in attendance as per Tyler's Register. 

EXPENSES FOR THE MONTH OF JULY

The following bills, having been reviewed by three acting members of the finance committee (Bro. Raymond Gehrig, WBro. Darrell Womack, WBro. Terry Grove) were submitted to the Lodge for approval.  After the acting chairman, Bro. Gehrig, attested to the accuracy of each bill or invoice, he stated the expenditures were in order and moved for the payment of the bills.  On vote of the brethren, the bills were approved for payment. 

READING OF PETITIONS

A petition for the degrees was received from Mr. Kalman Eric Koteles.  He was born in Portland, Oregon, April 10, 1967.  He is married and resides in Bothell, Washington.  He has been a resident of this state for twenty-two years.  Mr. Koteles is a performance engineer currently unemployed.  His petition was sponsored by Bro. George Rine, VWBro. Charles Brockway, and MWBro. Al Jorgensen.

A committee will be appointed to visit Mr. Koteles and to report back to the Lodge by the next Stated Communication.

NEW BUSINESS

Appointment of Audit Committee

The Master appointed Bro. David Flood (chair) and WBro. Allan Pinch to the Audit Committee.

Donation to the Lodge

VWBro. Jim Russell announced that Bro. Fred Hutchinson, who attended our proceedings earlier this evening, has donated a couple of dozen beautiful baseball caps embroidered with the square & compasses and our Lodge name.  The Master invited anyone who would like a cap to come forward to receive it following the close of the meeting.  Bro. Hutchinson’s generosity was acknowledged to the brothers’ delight. 

CLOSING OF LODGE

The minutes of this communication were read and approved in short form.  There being no further business to come before this lodge of Entered Apprentice Masons, the flag was retired and the lodge closed in due and ancient form by the Worshipful Master at 8:52pm, peace and harmony prevailing.
