Earl Isril Cashar - 6/27/20 - 1/28/09


Earl Isril Cashar was born June 27, 1920, in Vancouver, British Columbia, to Joseph and Annie Cashar. He and his wife Leah raised one daughter. He was a Seattle furrier when he became a Mason. Bro. Cashar was a Tacoma businessman for many years before his retirement.

Our Brother was initiated into Ionic Lodge No. 90, November 5, 1941. He was passed to a Fellowcraft Mason, December 17, 1941, and raised a Master Mason, March 4, 1942. He was a member of the Craft for 67 years.

Bro. Cashar was a victim of Alzheimer's in his final years. Loving husband and father, our brother passed to the Celestial Lodge in Seattle, Washington, on January 28, 2009, leaving his wife Leah, sister Bert Arno, daughter Elaine, and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Sam, and sisters Molly Naimark and Cecelia Levine. He was laid to rest at the Home of Peace Cemetery, Tacoma.

Albert Issac Halela - 1/14/25 - 4/30/09


Albert Issac Halela was born January 14, 1925 in Seattle, Washington. He and his wife Mary raised a daughter and a son. Al proudly served in the Navy in WWII and the Korean war. He worked at Boeing as a production welder when he became a Mason, enjoying that career for 20 years. Bro. Halela also had a long career as a manager with Pacific Fish Co. until his retirement in 1990. He enjoyed his many years working at Longacres Race Track in the program office.

Our Brother was initiated into Ionic Lodge No. 90, May 18, 1959. He was passed to a Fellowcraft Mason, September 24, 1959, and raised a Master Mason, November 4, 1959. He was presented his 40 year pin May 3, 2000. He was a member of the Craft for 49 years. Al was a member of the Sephardic Bikur Holim Congregation and the Seattle Sephardic Brotherhood. He enjoyed golf, bowling, cards, horse racing, theater, traveling, sports of any kind and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. His love and infectious smile touched all who knew him.

Bro. Halela was a victim of Alzheimer's in his final years. Loving husband and father, our brother passed to the Celestial Lodge in Seattle, Washington, on April 30, 2009, leaving his wife of 59 years, Mary, brother Victor, daughter Maggie Mosholder (Mark), son Robert (Randi), five grandchildren and a great grandson. He was laid to rest at Evergreen Washelli Cemetery, Seattle.

James M. Dawson - 5/28/21 - 5/4/09


James Martin Dawson was born May 28, 1921 in San Antonio, Texas.

Our Brother was initiated into Greenwood Lodge No. 253, April 30, 1980. He was passed to a Fellowcraft Mason, October 15, 1980, and raised a Master Mason, November 26, 1980. WBro. Dawson dimitted from Greenwood Lodge in 1991 and affiliated with Elliott Bay Lodge No. 257 on March 15 of that year. He served as Master of Elliott Bay in 1993. Our Brother was a member of the Scottish Rite, the York Rite and the Shrine. He was a member of Oriental Chapter #19 of the Royal Arch. He and his wife Maria were active members of the Eastern Star and the Order of the Amaranth.

WBro. Dawson spent the final year of his life in a nursing home while enduring the throes of Alzheimer's. He passed to the Celestial Lodge above on May 4, 2009, leaving his wife Maria and two daughters, Darlene Evans of Mississippi, and Victoria Werner of Brier, Washington.

David Leon Karpilow - 3/2/17 - 6/4/09


David Leon Karpilow was born March 2, 1917, in San Francisco, California. He grew up in Los Gatos, California, until he went to the University of California. He studied Electrical Engineering and continued his career in that field. Our brother met his wife Babette in San Francisco just before leaving to serve in the Air Force during WWII, where he trained pilots in navigation.

Our Brother was initiated into Euclid Lodge No. 64, AF & AM, Lajunta, Colorado, December 21, 1944. He was passed to a Fellowcraft Mason, May 23, 1945, and raised a Master Mason, June 15, 1945. Bro. Karpilow affiliated with Centennial Lodge No. 25 of Snohomish, Washington, January 19, 1983. He dimited from that Lodge in 2002 and affiliated with St. John's Lodge No. 9, January 8, 2003. He received his 60 year pin August 3, 2005. He was a Mason for sixty-four years.

At the end of his professional career, Bro. Karpilow and Babette went to Iran, where David conducted research for Bell Telephone and Babette taught at the University of Tehran. They were both caught in the Revolution which overthrew the Shah and had to hide out in the basement of friends before making their escape back to the United States.

Bro. David loved to play the violin. He played in several local orchestras including the Bellevue Symphony and the Edmonds Cascade Symphony Orchestras.

Bro. Karpilow fell and severely injured his back at his apartment in March of 2008, and following release from the hospital had been living in a couple of adult care facilities. Our brother was diagnosed with pneumonia and a few days following his transfer to hospital services passed to the Celestial Lodge, June 4, 2009. His ashes will be scattered in a wildlife sanctuary in Eastern Washington.

Bro. Karpilow leaves two children, son Craig of Canada and daughter Tavi of St. Louis, MO. Services were held Sunday, June 28, at Volunteer Park Seventh Day Adventist Church, Seattle.

Donald Ekrem Johnson 9/4/23 - 8/11/09


Donald Ekrem Johnson was born in Seattle, Washington, September 4, 1923. Bro. Don was married to Betty Fingarson until her passing in 1982. He then married Barbara Hildahl in 1983. They were married 26 years. Don worked as a carpenter from 1946-1952 and then was elected Executive Secretary for the Carpenters Union in 1954. He served in that position until his retirement in 1981.

Our Brother was initiated into St. John's Lodge No. 9, September 26, 1959. He was passed to a Fellowcraft Mason, November 28, 1959, and raised a Master Mason, January 16, 1960. Bro. Johnson was also a member of the Scottish Rite and the Shrine. Our brother was presented his 40-year service pin in 2000. He was a member of the Craft for 49 years.

Don's military service as a Marine included one year as a paratrooper, 6 months in the Guadalcanal, and an entire campaign on Iwo Jima.

Bro. Johnson suffered with Pulmonary Fibrosis in his final years. Our brother passed to the Celestial Lodge in Everett, Washington, on August 11, 2009 leaving his wife Barbara, four step-children, seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on August 30 at 2pm at North Creek Presbyterian Church in Mill Creek, Washington.

Isaac Victor Solam = 9/9/22 - 9/9/09


Isaac Victor Solam was born September 9, 1922, in Seattle, Washington to Victor and Esther Solam. A graduate of Garfield High School, he and his wife Esther raised two children. Isaac worked as a young man for several vendors at the Pike Place Market, managed the Seattle store of the Leeds Shoe chain and retired from the Boeing Company after 35 years of employment.

Our Brother was initiated into Elliot Bay Lodge No. 257, May 8, 1953. He was passed to a Fellowcraft Mason, June 29, 1953, and raised a Master Mason, November 13, 1953. He was a member of the Scottish Rite and the Nile Shrine. He received his 50 year pin as a member of the fraternity on Herb's Night, July 14, 2004.

Isaac spent his retirement years traveling with his family and enjoying his children and grandchildren. Brother Solam passed away on his birthday, Wednesday, September 9, 2009 after a long battle with cancer which he fought with strength, courage, and determination. He is survived by his wife Rachel Peha Solam; daughter Carol (Jeffrey) Altschul; son Jerome (Theresa and family); grandchildren Michelle and Michael Altschul; sister Mary Tarica; brother & sister-in-law Joe & Esther Peha; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Services were held graveside at the Seattle Sephardic Brotherhood Cemetery, Shoreline, on Friday, September 11, 2009. Remembrances may be sent to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Evergreen Hospice, Seattle Sephardic Brotherhood, City of Hope or the Jewish Federation.

Larry Rex Loughnan - 3/6/39 - 11/10/09

Larry Rex Loughnan was born to Archie and Irma Loughnan, March 6,1939 in Shelton, Washington. Larry grew up in Seattle, where he attended Lincoln High School. After graduating, he served in the Army as a cook at Fort Ord. In 1958 he married his wife Donna, with which he recently celebrated his 51st wedding anniversary. Larry and Donna then moved from Seattle to the Shoreline area where they raised their family. He sold real estate for a short time before beginning a 28 year career in the mailing room with the Seattle Times and Post-Intelligencer newspapers.

VWBro. Loughnan was initiated into Ionic Lodge No. 90, December 2, 1981, passed to a Fellowcraft, January 19, 1982, and raised a Master Mason, February 16, 1982. VWBro. Larry served as Master of Ionic Lodge in 1986 and 1987. In 1988 he received the Grand Master's Achievement Award. He was appointed Deputy of the Grand Master for District No. 5 by MWBro. Sid Kase in 1990 and re-appointed to that position by MWBro. James Vannice in 1991.

Our brother was elected Junior Warden of St. John's Lodge No. 9 following the merger of our two lodges in 1993, but was unable to serve because he suffered a disabling stroke following a medical procedure. His other affiliations include Walter F. Meier Lodge of Research No. 281, Scottish Rite, Nile Shrine, St. Albion's Conclave-Past Master Royal Arch, Royal Order of Scotland, and Order of Amaranth. Before his stroke, Larry was very active and dedicated to raising money for many different charities. In his spare time he enjoyed coaching men's softball. He and his wife, Donna, belonged to the Shelter Bay Yacht Club in La Conner. They spent many unforgettable vacations boating in the San Juan Islands. After suffering his stroke, his artistic talents began to shine. He took up watercolor painting, primarily of boating scenes and flowers. Northwest Hospital Gift Shop began to sell prints and cards of his work.

Our brother is survived by wife, Donna Loughnan, son and daughter-in-law Randy and Sonya Loughnan, daughter and son-in-law Shelley and Rian Ebesugawa, and grandchildren Shawna and Ryan Loughnan. Masonic memorial services will be held at 2pm Thursday, November 19, at Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Home, under the direction of WBro. Rick Becker of Eureka Lodge No. 20, with a reception following at the Nile Temple.
