As the Second World War was drawing to an end, the advancing Russian Army forced his family to flee behind a wagon and team of horses in below zero weather to West Germany.

Once the war drew to a close Bruno was able to continue his grade school education. He had to work for local farmers to help supplement the family income while his father was a Russian POW. His father was released in late 1947.

In 1951, a farmer in Iowa contacted the family offering to sponsor and pay their way to the United States. In return, Bruno and his family were required to work for him for a year. At the age of 15, WBro. Zittlau traveled by train with the family to Sioux City, Iowa. After working for the farmer Bruno took a job working for a candy kitchen and bakery in Sioux City. In 1955 he joined the U.S. Air Force, serving for four years.

In 1957 Bruno married Elaine Welcher. They were blessed with two sons, Raymond - born June 26, 1959 and Terry - born November 26, 1966. The family moved to Seattle, Washington, in 1960 and purchased their present home in 1962.

WBro. Zittlau was initiated into Elliot Bay Lodge No. 257 on September 9, 1981, passed to a Fellowcraft April 16, 1981, and raised a Master Mason September 8, 1982. He served as Master of Elliot Bay Lodge in 1987 and 1995. Elliot Bay merged with St. John's Lodge No. 9 on April 15, 1997. WBro. Bruno was a member of Occidental Lodge No. 72 and Ancient Light Lodge No. 88 of Vancouver, BC. Our brother also was a member of the Seattle Valley of the Scottish Rite and the Nile Shrine. He and his wife were active members of the Occidental and Doric Chapters of the Order of Eastern Star. He served as Worthy Patron of Daylight Chapter.
