Francis Cushman
From "History of St. John's Lodge No. 9 F&AM of Seattle, Washington, Volume II, 1950-2001"
(Alexandra Rush, author)

"Bro. Frank Cushman served on the Visitation Committee more than 26 years - a beacon of hope for Lodge members unable to attend meetings and widows of deceased members. He drove more than 200 miles in some months and made as many as 20 calls on widows. Bro. Cushman remembers one Lodge meeting when "Jonesey" (WBro. Harold Jones) surprised him by asking him to deliver his visitation report from the Eaqst. When he arrived in the East, Jonesey reached over, patted him on the belly and said, "We see the widows are feeding you well!"

Bro. Frank Cushman was born in Toppenish, Washington, April 25, 1913. As a young man he was a boomer, coal passer, and ashcat. Later he discovered surveying and made his life's work in that field as a brushcutter, rod man, and rear chainman. He was raised in St. Jonn's Lodge May 26, 1974. From August to December 1984, he became acting Treasurer when Andrew C. Cowe resigned due to health problems. He was appointed to office many times, serving as Junior Steward in 1974, Junior Deacon in 1975, Senior Deacon in 1976, Senior Steward from 1977 to 1979, and Marshal from 1981 through 1986. He was also Bible-bearer on the funeral team for many years

In 1988, he was presented the Master's Award of Merit by WBro. Jarrold Schuh for his tireless efforts to help the sick and lonely. On January 26, 1991, Bro. Cushman was presented the Hiram Award by the Grand Master for distinguished service to the Craft. In 1996, he received the Grand Master's Achievement Award. At the award presentation, the brethren gave him a round of applause and for the first time anyone could remember, he was speechless.

In December 1997, Bro. Cushman was declard Tyler Emeritus for his service to the Lodge. He had been Tyler since 1989. On February 4, 1998, Master WBro. Paul Winter presented him a tile to be included on the wall just inside the entrance to the Scottish Rite Masonic Center. The inscription on the tile reads:

Francis E. (Frank) Cushman
Tyler Emeritus
Keeper of the Gate
Friend to All
St. John's Lodge No. 9

Bro. Frank Cushman also served as Tyler for Theodore Roosevelt Lodge, Daylight Lodge and Thomas M. Reed Lodge No. 225. He is distinguished as an Honorary Past Master at Thomas M. Reed. He is also affiliated with Scottish Rite and Walter f. Meier Lodge."

Bro. Cushman passed this mortal veil in a rest home on August 28, 2005 and his Brethren mourn.
The papers included in this section are all written by Bro. Frank Cushman and all show his insight into a Mason's life.
